You can't see Ernst's voice, who is also the pianist, due to the zoom in but when they kiss for a second time Ernst's voice spins in his chair out of happiness over his new found love. That's why the audience laughs.

andy mientus has been a 14 year old for like uhh 7 years im so proud of him
  • @23QT123
Andy is pretty much the only Hanschen actor to truly play the role with all its subtleties and make the scene a careful balance of humor and real intimacy.
  • @lexi219
Hanschen using the sign for "trust" to pull himself closer to Ernst at 0:55 is such creative blocking. Love this revival.

I love that moment when Hanschen says "cream", and Daniel hits the piano keys while Josh kind of freaks out.

I like this scene more in the dwsa than the obc; not only does the sign language make everything more intimate, but their relationship in this is portrayed as more genuine and sincere then in the original, and you can tell hanschen really cares for Ernst, which makes this scene more rewarding overall.

The way Andy says "and so you should" is just.. It's sweet, it's not condescending, it's in a reassuring way, as if to tell Ernst "you should, it's okay to" and I just love it so much

this is so much more romantic than the original lmao
  • @princefado
I adore how this production combines both humor and genuine affection... so many productions (even the original) just make it funny. Hanschën IS kind of self-absorbed and silly, but he does really care for Ernst, I think. He can do both. He doesn't have to just want to get into Ernst's pants for his character to work. I think it's much more interesting this way, and certainly more rewarding.

hanschen: those bells... so peaceful... ernst: hanschen I appreciate the conversation starter, but... I'm deaf?

This is the only version of the Vineyard scene that matters
  • @Chlo255
I just realized that when Hanschen is listing the three ways Ernst is counting them on his fingers 😊😊 how precious is that????

Scenes like this can only be fully pulled off in the Deaf West version - using ASL really helps not only get the scene across perfectly but adds so much to it (that whole skimming-off-the-cream thing...)
  • I think I've watched this more times than I've gone to church and I don't know how to feel about it
  • this version of this song is beautiful. in the OBC version they made a comedy routine out of this song, but the deaf west version made this seem as beautiful as Wendla & Melchior' Word of Your Body. the entire deaf west production is so amazing

That part at the end when Hanschen shakes his head and then kisses him!!! I'm dying!!!
