This Review of the D&D Starter set, definitely convinced me to get Halls of the Blood King 😁
  • Oh hey! I heard my name! Lol The information design of the OSE line is fantastic!

I just saw a video about playing solo play in D&D. You should. Talk about that too. Also I have the players guide and the dragon book for the D&D 3rd edition I got it for Christmas of 2008. I did not know how to get a group, or did not know a lot about the game. You should talk about what you need for each D&D, and other rpg games.

it takes a periapt of wisdom for a content creator to know when to reset at ground level for new audiences standing at the front door. well played. even down to Deathbringer making a family-friendly mascot joke for concerned moms. curious if something happened at gencon that inspired this?
  • I've been branching out from D&D and have been getting a lot of starter boxes and WotC needs to step up their game when it comes to their starter boxes. Essentials Kit was alright, but compared to PF2e and CoC's (among others), I was pretty underwhelmed with this one.

Excellent as always Prof! Great breakdown.

Honestly, recommending new DMs to watch your stuff was solid advice. I have nearly 20 years in the hobby, and I learn tons of valuable information from you.

Nice review, and I agree with the bullet points and stats up front. The easier it is for someone new, the less frustration (and more fun) they'll have sooner in the experience of playing/running TTRPGs. (Deathbringer's name drop was hilarious, always glad to see someone cross-referencing others in the hobby.)
  • Thanks professor...another great video...your nearly at 100, 000 subscribers...you'll definitely get there! Your content is brilliant!! Keep it up mate...regards...Danny in sunny Yorkshire, England 🇬🇧 👍

Glad to see you are sticking to your guns on effective design after all these years. I just don't understand why anyone would buy this when indie designers make cheaper and better stuff?

Watching the video I had numerous thoughts about what I would do differently were I designing such a product but I was also reminded that WotC is just never going to produce an edition of D&D that I don't have to house rule so heavily it is basically a different game. Having said that, my biggest takeaway here is that it's just WEIRD to hear you, Professor DM, talking about D&D without the lens of your own house rules focusing your words. That is to say, I truly appreciate your take on D&D and how it's much more in line with what I want than with what WotC produces.

Hello PDM, thank you for the review! I agree with your critique.
  • @xer0vi
    You gave some amazing advice!

Nice review, especially for the new players and DMs that will be encountering it. It’s hard to have an intro product that does everything right. They’ve been so close with the 5e products but keep missing on one or two little things. I will say that WOTC’s new campaign cases look top notch for the price.

With all the profit Hasbro makes they could have included = A cardboard sheet of character/monster standees, a few bases (I think pathfinder beginner set includes this) and at least one blank regular paper sized laminated sheet of grid, where the DM could draw with a dry erase marker.
