To be fair, Long Halloween (the original graphic novel) is a direct sequel to Year One and was always intended to be. The first victim of Holiday is the same thug who kidnapped Gordon's baby.

The Long Halloween comic was written as a "follow-up" to Year One. The Long Halloween is essentially Year Two without really detailing how lots of the masked villains shows up.

This movie might be one of the most faithful adaptations of all time. It's pretty much shot for shot, word for word like the comic.

I would still say Mask of the Phantasm is the best version. And I do think it qualifies as an origin film as half the runtime is about how he became Batman. But having said that, this film is extremely underrated and definitely deserves the love.

One of the biggest reasons I think people love Mask of the Phantasm outside of the BRILLIANCE associated with every aspect of that film IS, because it's not another origin story AND challenges Batman as a character. To this day the movie will give me chills whe he kneels in front of his parents grave begging for forgiveness, because he never planned on being happy while being Batman. An incredible Batman movie and NOT just another damn origin story.

I loved the Jim Gordon we got in The Batman with Jeffrey Wright, but Imma be real, I still wish we could see Bryan Cranston have a go with the role on screen because I was sold on him being a live action Gordon after seeing this movie YEARS ago.

Saw the movie years ago and loved it. When I started collected comics recently, I picked up Year One, and boy it was amazing. The story is largely the same, but the art is superb. The monologue and narration is great too which was heavily reduced in the movie version for obvious reasons.

I love that the Dark Knight Returns movies are sequels to this one just like the comics. You can see photos of young Jim from this movie in his house in those films

It's year one. Of course not everything is resolved. We do see Barbara react when she answers the phone. The tenderness between Jim and Barbara is gone. They fulfill their parental roles without touching each other. Ultimately, Barb leaves Jim and takes the boy with her. Later, Jim marries Sarah and when he retires in the Dark Knight Returns, Sarah is still with him. But that's decades from year one (and possibly non-canon, I mean President Reagan's in it and he's dead)

The Batman basically Year One + The Long Halloween + Seven movie. If you like them, you'll gonna love the new movie.
