I decided it was time to go back to my Spidey roots with the show that introduced ME to the character properly. 1994’s Spider-Man: The Animated Series. And I know I’m not the only one who grew up on this Spidey. For the better part of a decade this was the DEFINITIVE version of the character for so many kids, basically until Raimi’s first Spider-Man film released in 2002. And I think you can actually see a lot of this show’s influence in how the Raimi trilogy was approached and executed. But the big question I had going in was: does Spider-Man The Animated series hold up? Or is nostalgia altering my memories? Well, let’s find out.

aww man, i can't believe you skipped over that amazing set of lines in the old Spidey episode! after the Vulture drains his youth and he's turned into an old man for a while, Spider-Man saves a woman from getting mugged and she recognized his age. then they have the best superhero line of my childhood: "I didn't know you were a senior citizen!" "it's the job... it ages you." 100/10 writing.
  • Also, don’t forget that there’s an entire Spider-Man ride in Orlando that’s based on this version of the character that is still active to this day! Such an influential and classic show.
  • The fact that they put this Peter through so much really culminates in when he has to face off against a version of himself that couldn’t handle that pain.
  • The Venom story in this show is executed perfectly. I will maintain that this show, that defined Spidey for the Millennial generation, is the reason why there's a Venom movie and that character is so loved. This version of Venom is still my favourite version too, the slightly bigger, evil Spider-Man. He's written as an alter-ego, rather than the arch villain. Also loved how Peter Parker behaved in the black suit, just confident and more aggressive, and intimidating.

That final "Nooo!" scream. Dude that one hit harder than the others. This time he watched Mary Jane melt away. The others she just dissappeared. This time he effectively had to watch her die.

This show is what introduced me to Spider-Man as a child. When other kids dressed as Batman or Superman or Power Rangers for Halloween, I dressed as Spider-Man (with the black webbing under the arms). And this Spider-Man is the voice I hear in my head whenever I read his lines whether in stories or comics.
  • I can basically remember all the episodes of this great show when I was between 5-9 yrs old, but by far... the episode that always stood out the most is the one when Mary Jane after her mysterious return from that time dilation dimension turns out to be just the water cloned version of the actual MJ. When she cried her whole heart out to Peter even though she wasn't the real MJ, and then just evaporated out of Peter's life. Not also was I completely shocked by that insane twist, I was also devastated as a kid to watch Mary Jane Watson die before my eyes and then to watch Peter's anguish as he yet again loses the love of his misfortunate life. One of the most saddest and haunting episodes I have ever seen of any show to this day.

You gonna have to meet me on the streets over that Stan Lee episode. That was Stan Lee's best cameo, hands down, and it was heartwarming. Especially love the ending when Peter said something like, "That Stan Lee sure is great," while Madam Webb, whose voice actress is Stan Lee's wife, said, "I think so too."
  • I think one of my favourite parts of the Spiderman Animated series is how he defeats Spider-Carnage. He doesn't defeat him by overpowering him or outsmarting him but by getting the one person who could appeal his humanity, Uncle Ben

Spider-Man: TAS is an excellent base intro for anyone who has a clean slate to Spider-Man as an icon. It can be a great bridge to the basic comics and/or vice versa. It's obviously also a precursor to the foundation of what makes the Raimi Trilogy so solid. That being said, it also feels like a censored-to-death milquetoast 1990's knockoff that is trying to replicate the amazing success that was Batman: The Animates Series of the same era.

I think one reason why Venom is so beloved is the fact that, in a lot of ways, he is to Spider-Man what Virgil is to Dante. Or what Shadow is to Sonic. Or Seto Kaiba to Yugi.

This show introduced me to Spider-Man as well! Also my first ever introduction to superheroes in general
  • I not only watched it on Jetix growing up, i also rewatched it when Disney plus came out. Honestly, even without nostalgia filters this show still bangs super hard.

I am from Pakistan and this is very true this show got me into drawing and writing stories and today I am working as an asset modeler and texture artist in a game company thank you Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

One of the best shows ever. I will always use this show as the baseline for how Spiderman should be

Great Video, Johnny. To answer your question about why they De-aged the Vulture for the show: it’s an adaptation of the “Life-theft” storyline from the comics by David Michelinie, where Vulture uses life energy absorbing technology to restore his youth and cure his cancer. He’s also drains Spider-Man’s youth here, but once Peter defeated him, Adrian remained young in the comics for years ( including when the show was airing). So it’s as simple as that.
  • @immolation4390
Vulture’s costume and him making himself younger was taken from a comic arc from the early 90s. It wasn’t created for the show. The Silvermane storyline was also taken from Stan Lee story arc from the 60s. I loved that show growing up, and when I finally read the Stan Lee comics when older, I found out that so many of those episodes were adapted directly from the comics.

My grandfather got me into the animated comic shows on fox kids at a young age. He is a lifelong comic nerd (even collected entire sets of happy meal toys associated with them) and I remember sitting in his den with him at probably 3 or 4 years old as he was watching his vhs recording of episodes that had aired that week for spider-man, x-men, and batman. He was a nasa software engineer so no surprise he could set a VCR lol. If it wasn't for him I never would have fallen in love with those characters. He is also the same guy who watched power rangers so he would have something that i was interested in to talk to me about and took me to the power rangers movie twice on its opening weekend. Papa is a freaking legend and I just want everyone to know it
