The reading backdrop is beautiful, glad the weather seemed pleasant. 📖👏👏👏 Truly enjoyed hearing these two chapters. Affection and compassion comes shining through 💛

This chapter meant a lot to me because I grew up 1/2 Jewish in southern West Virginia. I wish I could say people were more accepting of us. My mother’s father was a Pentecostal preacher but my dad converted to Judaism. Dad grew up in Jewish neighborhoods, in Chicago. His family moved away but came back years later.

Another wonderful reading. This may be my favorite of the books you’ve read to us. As a quilter, I find the quilting bee concept so great. Thank you, Tipper, for story time! I look forward to it all week!

I'm enjoying this book very much! I understood the exchanges just as you explained them. I did pick up on a word I heard a lot from my grandmother, "comeuppance". It's a great word and I still use it today. 😊 Prayers for everyone as always. ❤

Such a wonderful and descriptive read! The section about Granny Hite helping the foreigners reminded me of my mother. She would be the 1st help anybody but she would tell them that w/ the help came the chance they would be talked about. I never knew if that was a joke or not.

This book reminds me that when I was about 10 years old a family from Estonia moved into our community because of so much turmoil in their country. A family from our area sponsored them. They spoke very little English. There were five children and they all started to the school where I went. Of course I was fascinated with them and their ways that were so different from what I had been accustomed to in the part of Appalachia (West Virginia) that I lived in. The neighbors were very kind to them and gave them things to help them start a new life in a new country. They were very nice and hard working people, just victims of circumstances they had no control over. As I have grown older I often wonder what it must have been like to have been in their situation. Tipper, as always I enjoy your reading sessions. I enjoy hearing someone else read as well as loving to read myself. Prayers continue for Granny as well as all your family. ❤ Blessings. 40:27

I love this story! The foreigners remind me of a small town I raised my kids in. They were very kind and giving there, but if you were not from certain families you were NFL'ers ( Not From Lincolnton). I sure do miss that small town life❤...Thank you for bringing this book to us!

I couldn’t wait to hear you read this week, I have my own book coming from EBay . Because I wanted to have this book for my own library, but I will still enjoy hearing you read each week. You can make a story come alive by your excitement and understanding the mountain language. I looked for and found a nice book of The Nine brides and granny Hite and bought it. My Grandma was born in Jones Cove in Sevierville County, Tennessee. And I can imagine my family talking and living there in the mountains. Thanks for bringing us along on your weekly reading.
  • One of the names mentioned, Effie, was my great great-grandmother’s name. I was fortunate enough to be able to remember her. Good old Effie Mae. Thank you for the reading.
