Does Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Lead To Hip And Knee Pain?

Published 2022-06-24
Spinal stenosis in the lower back affects the nerves that run down the legs into the hips and knees.

It is common for people to have pain, numbness, achiness, and tingling into the legs as a result of the lumbar spinal stenosis.

In our clinic, we see people with stenosis develop knee pain and hip pain as a result of the stenosis problem. It might be referred nerve pain because of pinched nerves OR it could be the leg muscles not working properly causing the hip and knee joints to be affected. It could also be both situations happing at the same time.

Either way, this situation is frustrating for people because now they might have a back problem, knee problem, and hip problem :-(

The good news is that nearly all cases of lumbar spinal stenosis get better naturally without surgery. That means the hip and knee pain can clear up as long as it hasn’t been there long enough to cause permanent changes in the joints.

Wow, finally found someone who described what I have been dealing with for 3 years. I have had pains down the front of my legs. I have had pain in my thighs that are worse in bed....not always - periodically. In the last several months I have had pains in my knees, kneeling hurts ( I never had knee problems in the past). Three times in the last several months sitting at a restaurant, my right knee started hurting so much I had to stand up and walk around. Once my left knee started hurting and woke me up at night. I just had an MRI and they said I have spinal stenosis. until your video, everything I read about has to do with walking and standing. my pains are when I am sitting or laying down. I am 75 years old and very healthy and active. Thanks, I want to learn more

Now I'm fighting the VA for the issues that followed after my back injury this is exactly what happened to me and I'm only 29. thank you for your video and your time.

This makes so much sense. Just added the Back Wellness series to my library. So grateful to you for all the detailed info you provide.
  • @V.V.2207
very detailed explanation. Thanks a lot, Sir.
  • Wow. Great explanation. I had a bulging disc a few years ago. My knee has been painful. My back has been sore. I do believe it stems from the back because it goes some times after stretching. I wish you were located near my city. Thanks for the video. New subcriber...
  • Thank you for this video. Been to numerous drs and spine drs specifically and got more information from this video than anyone in my whole life. I have Hypermobile EDS, Osgood slaughters in the knees and fractured my tailbone when i was 8...i was diagnosed with "Swayback" when i was 19 or 20 during my pregnancy. And ive been trying to get help with my hips and knees for years and i believe the tears started about 2 years ago or so. I just turned 40 and have just been referred back to the spinal dr again by the ortho and im just losing my mind. Ugh

What r exercises for this problem Sir.May Lord bless u.
  • Thank you sooo much i have been digging for information about this for a year. This is exactly what i thought. They think i'm crazy when i've explained these syptoms. I had been diagnosed with this stenosis thing a couple of years ago, it stated with a severe neck pain that resticted my motion and the pain would shoot down my left arm, debilitating. after about 10 more doctors visits for similar issues, and therapy for that! right before covid my hip started to hurt where i could no longer stand long to do the dishes or cook without a stool, then during covid my knee went out - no injury it just started KILLING ME i literally couldnt walk. i went to the chiropractor because after several visits to my doctor nothhing was working. tight leg, knee pain, it was aweful, i was in pain and they would not prescribe me any opiods. I have been miserable, but i know that wasn't the answer but i was despeerate as i need to work. i have been to physical therapy several times, today, my knee is starting to hurt and i swear it feels like a nerve pain in opposed to an injury pain. if that makes sense. also, my foot would often hurt sooo bad for no reason, i dont know how to explain where that pain is but if i roll my foot over to the left it KILLLLS omg the pain. i'm in chicago, what type of doctor should i ask my primary care physician for and what should i tell them, i have been dealing with this for about 6 years or more. My doctor said i have arthritis in the neck and knee, after mri's ecg, all the tests. thank you for any suggestions in advance.

When do you say it’s just time to get a laminectomy and take off compression (with severe stenosis)? I’m in my 40s with lumbar stenosis and have all this. Hip and knee on right side.
  • I enjoy your videos. I have lumber spondylosis but you always discuss about lumber stenosis. Are they the same. Otherwise what exercise should I do to help me. Thanks very much

I have arthritis in one of my knees. I'm taking this supplement and it has made my knee joint stiff and painful. Should I continue taking it. I was meant to take 4 capsules I'm taking six because it expires on 21/07/2022.
  • Thank you for extremely helpful information. I had double knee replacement surgery 15 years ago. Diagnosed with STENOSIS L2,3,4,5. TWO EPIDURALS did not help pain. Developed mostly swollen feet and left leg, pain behind both knees. What do you suggest ?

I have DDD and sacroiliac artroze ..back pain both knees pain and shooting pains thru legs...what exercise should I do to help my knees
  • Good morning Dr. I hope you are still answering questions from this video. My dr. suggested that I start taking injections to relief the inflammation of my lower back pain. I’m scared off these injections. Will they help in making life more bearable.
  • @moony77
I know this is a year old but ever since I fractured my coccyx, as well as a right hip avulsion fracture from a fall, both of my medial menisci are torn, and I have much knee pain and inflammation. Could you recommend where on Earth for me to start feeling better and regaining my prior activity level💜

These are my symptoms I’m still having even after an epidural for my 2 disk and spine stenosis. With the left hip bursa also still painful. Epidurals help the back pain but the left knee and shin are very painful still. Dr has said I need a steroid shot in the bursa. What exercises might help? So tired of shots and pills! 🤷🏼‍♀️
