They should put the torque spec. On every scope box and ring bag so people know exactly which is proper torque!

Wow, this is very eye opening! I had no Idea! Now I need to check my tubes. Thanks!

Takes a lot of guts to publicly admit your mistakes. Way to be, DD šŸ‘
  • Scope manufacturers, please clearly mark and publish torque specifications I quit using tread lock and use alcohol and try to get all the oil off. I have found it can be tricky to mount the modern hunting scopes. I am a novice who has made mistakes mounting scopes but I have also had ā€œgunsmithsā€ that have mounted scopes for me and brought them back to me in a matter of minutes making me wonder about the quality of the job. Thanks for the info. I am learning from your advice.

This video is needed by many. Buy good rings and follow the scope manufacturer's recommendations. I prefer to use Leupold rings and Leupold scopes for my hunting rifles. On the other hand, my paper punchers have a variety of glass on them.

I'm looking to buy my 1st rifle and this was great info. Thank you.

Excellent video. I was momentarily scared about what I might've done to a new Leopold but then remembered that I used 18 in-lb, which I only knew from the Vortex podcast before. Your video explains why.

Thanks I have a scope on the way and this is great information.

This is perfect timing. I'm pretty sure I've bought a used Swarovski with a wondering zero. Hence, I'm in the market for a new scope.

Excellent information. Iā€™ve always tightened my ring screws by feel. A few years ago I purchased a torque driver and started tightening screws as per to specs for the rings but didnā€™t really take into account the specs for the scope which is the more expensive item. I I didnā€™t realize loctite or oil increase torque by such a large margin. Thanks for the advice.
  • Your comment on scope durability along with getting the initial mounting of rings to the base having them set forward is totally spot on. Between those two things I have seen more scope malfunctions/ failures due to stuff moving or getting straight up broke in the last 5 years than I have seen with optics in the rest of my life. A decent scope some people might want to check out if durability is a concern but they still want a more simple scope is the trijicon ascent 3-12x40
  • Thank you for taking the time to make a great video on this issue!!

Anybody who has ever run CNC parts knows the consequences of under-torque/over-torque when clamping material for machining. Great content, as usual.

Very good info as always DD, thank you. I did not know that all values are DRY. Cleaning the manufacturing oil off rings is a good point.
  • Thanks for sharing this and I have not killed a scope yet but it is great advice for all to chew on.again you lead everyone in a common sense direction, thanks and happy hunting šŸ˜
