This was part of the Road to Hana on Maui... a road along a cliff with one way traffic. See what happened to us as we rounded a corner and came face to face with a big dump truck!

The Jeep in front of us was the other half of our family members... not pissed, just trying to get the hell out of the way of the big truck coming towards us! His view to the rear was partially blocked by the top of the Jeep that they had taken off and put in the back, as well as the other members of our family in the back seat. We were all just trying not to die! :)

This must be the south route from Hana heading west on Pilani Highway 31 for I don't remember this section when I rode my bicycle from Paia to Hana on highway 36/360 (north route heading east). I was going to take this route back, but knowing the off road terrain, I couldn't risk having mechanical problem on my rental bicycle so I went back on 360.

Why the hell was a truck that size on that road?!?

Hana Highway is the road that tests one's ablilty to back up. There are a lot of people (local and tourist) who can't back up a car. It look like the jeep was going to slam into you. He was either mad or in a hurry. Another thing. It's a good idea to honk your horn going around corners like these. Locals will fly around these corners going a lot faster. Incidents on this road are usually caused by driving too fast.

Sorry, in the first place, it wasn't the road engineers who constructed those roads, it was the private landowners who widen the trails to make the road wider for moving cattle. And, eventually the county started to provide minimal maintenance to the roads on that side of East Maui. Also, the locals who lives there, prefer the roads to be left alone with little improvement.

We are planning to take road to hana. Do you know which spot (mile marker or any info) you driving when the dump truck forced you to drive in reverse? Appreciate. thx.
  • @Jenluvsthenuge
I'm not sure, but I think it was the "main" way people take to get there. There were lots of spots like that, and you pretty much had to honk as you came up to each bend. There were even signs that said to honk. We took the "other way" on the return trip... I can't tell you what road it was, but it was the only other choice if you don't go the way we did on the trip there. Lots of great scenery on both roads. Have a great trip!
  • you can thank your smart road engineers for making such a wonderfull road to drive on.
  • @cloudeleven
Did the Jeep driver in front of you give you the finger at 4:31?
  • @johnp8639
this is not the road to Hana, it's the Piilani Highway on google maps its at: Lone Keawe Hana Hwy Hana, HI 96713‎

I took a driving tour through hana. it was well worth it as I am a horrible driver.
  • @Jenluvsthenuge
Well, that's really odd, because it was the road that took us to Hana... it was the one that was recommended, and we went back on whatever the other road was on the opposite side of the road to Hana... I don't know what that one was called but it was less travelled and wasn't recommended, and there was a lot more cattle and more volcanic scenery.
  • @Jenluvsthenuge
No! See the above comment... the Jeep in front of us was the other half of our family.

the road to hana is a cakewalk, try the head road[ northwest end of the island] for the most exciting drive of your life..look down at spots ans see the car wrecks thousands of feet below you.
