  • I said before, it's a crime that Megamind didn't get the Puss in Boots treatment.
  • This looks like something Nickelodeon would commission IMMEDIATELY after the movie's release in 2010s
  • From what I’ve heard, Dreamworks have begun outsourcing their animation, and giving lesser budgets. This same thing happened to The Bad Guys Holiday Special.
  • Will Ferrel was apparently offered the script and he claimed it was garbage therefore he would not return to voice him

"Kung fu panda has one" It has three "And HTTYD has one" Shows the fifth one

It gives off Miraculous Ladybug vibes. In a bad way. Actually, I don't think anyone can even interpret that in a good way.

I literally said a week ago I'm glad they didn't make a sequel because it would get the despicable me treatment. They fucking read my mind.

Disclaimer: I work for the company that owns Dreamworks’ parent company. I can confirm, this was made with a small “made for tv” budget. The company isn’t doing so well financially so budget cuts had to be made. Having the same studio animate the series and movie is common now. For example: WBD had the studio that made the ATHF movie make an additional 5 episode season as well.

Edit: An actual animator responded to this comment, please check responses! 3:14 well, I'm no animator but I'll graduate as a film editor soon and I think (and I hope) what's happening here it's that it is a early render, and it was done quickly just to put something out, probably because of deadlines or something and that's why it is lacking lighting, texture and all kinds of technologies that allow animation to look as good as it looks now as an example, skin is very difficult to get right, as it has lots of different layers, each with different transparency and colour (probably a lot more properties than this two). Another thing is our brains are just meant to recognize faces and some other features really easily and how they are supposed to look, so small deviations from that instantly makes us feel like something wrong, like mrbeast thumbnails Hopefully this helps a little, it is a really complicated but interesting topic
  • It's so bold for DreamWorks to go around making movies such as The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, where they have strikingly compelling art styles that take inspiration from Spider-Verse, and then make a Megamind sequel with animation that looks on par with a Cartoon Network show from 2012. What fine consistency they have.

It's funny how Pyro brought up certain MCU actors not coming back for Marvel What If? Pretty much the entire cast of Scott Pilgrim vs the World, which included big name actors such as Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Kieran Culkin, and Aubrey Plaza, came back for the Scott Pilgrim anime. Keep in mind, all of them responded within three hours as soon as they announced they were doing an anime and it was for a film that didn't do all that great in the box office bomb. If that's not dedication, I don't know what it.

When the Wattpad fanfiction is better written and more faithful than the professionally made sequel

I had the og script memorized as a kid💀 rip megamind. Animation that looks like this is almost always due to ridiculous deadlines.

from what ive seen, the problems are 1. lighting. scenes are lit with basic lighting that casts uncomfortable sharp shadows. 2. animation. the style of animation isnt bad, it just doesnt fit the theme nor does it look anything like the origional. 3. rendering. defineately the biggest problem, its just default. it looks like they didnt use raycasting, so there isn't properly simulated lighting. there aren't actual ray bounces, or deflections, or absorption. there's plenty more its missing that I probably dont even know about because Ive only had 2 years in an underfunded film school.
  • @Catsorsomin
I like how even people who don’t care about megamind suddenly acted like it was their whole childhood
  • You would think that after Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, DreamWorks would start upgrading their style a little bit.
  • @CalebisOdd
The reason it looks so bad is yes because of the things mentioned but because of the lack of budget they had to stream line everything for speed over quality. Animation is done quick and made with fewer keyframes, lighting is generic and not done with an artist intent, same with shot composition, low quality/single color textures etc. I think the BIGGEST reason why it looks crap is the character models, they are obviously not the same as the original (they wouldn't be used anyway) but they have been remade for quick animation. In the original everything would have been animated by hand to be expressive and dynamic, however this being a tv show movie basically I don't think they went the same route (think family guy pose to pose). The cherry on top is speed-running the rendering, everything is done to be extremely fast, super simple and plane, this is why the backgrounds are so empty and everything looks low quality with less detail.
