My personal favorite is the Deaf West cast with Andy, Jonathan, and Daniel just because the sign language is so pretty and their voices are so good and I'm in love with them. Andy and Ben (both Ben M. and Ben F.) are probably my second favorite.

I like JBW and GG best mainly for their vocals. Gideon is so sincere and JBW really has the cold arrogant thing going
  • i like the deaf west version because i feel like in the original broadway version, the reason the audience is laughing is because of the homosexual nature, whilst in deaf west, they are laughing at the actual character dynamic between ernst and hanschen. i also just love andy mientus and josh castille :)

Josh/Daniel and Andy are perfect and the best, how dare you not include my babies.

Gideon and Jonny are cute and will always be my standard for hanschen and Ernst but I'll always love josh and Andy the most because they made this song into a beautiful beautiful thing

Sadly the entire dynamic between the characters is not a happy one. in the original play it is set up as somewhat different, but they have it right in that Hanschen is a malicious person. So not only do I react to GG's passionate sincerity, but it really helps heighten that dynamic - that one person is using the other for their own vanity.JBW and Gideon. JBW has the perfect icy character of the original figure in the German. He is cold, distant, and mercinary, exactly as the character was intended. He seems like he can deliver a lecture on the "Uebermensch" at any moment. Glick is the perfect counterpart - not only is his character sincere in their affections, but his voice is the perfect pitch. He speaks his lines with such sincerity, as if he truly feels this way. The others...I don't know, the pair after this - Ernst is like a stereotype, and the kiss is way too graphic. This kiss is perfect - passioante, sweet  (from Ernst at least). Only the audience laughing kind of disrupts the poignance. Also these actors have the best timing with the music. JBW and GG forever.

Johnny and Gideon. The chemistry between them and their acting is wonderful. I actually prefer their kiss over Andy and Ben's. It's supposed to be Ernst first kiss so it's going to be slow and sweet. The other one looks too experienced and kind of takes me out of the moment. Not denying it's hotness it just doesn't work for me in this situation lol and to add another couple, Devon and Daniel from the 2NT did a beautiful job with this scene! But my heart will always belong to the OBC :)
  • I mean I love JBW and GG but I feel like I can't fairly judge any show that uses the original blocking for this scene cause I hate it so much. Also, Josh Castille has my whole heart and I love the chemistry he had with Andy so

Andy and Ben have the best chemistry and the scene seems a lot more intimate and passionate between the two. Plus, Ben's Ernst is probably the most naturally innocent one.

I keep thinking Andy's gonna say it like "POOSAY CAT". Anyone who's seen their spoof on it through the TotallyTrucked vids knows what I mean ;) Ben and Andy forever <3

When I realized these videos were posted before the Deaf West production existed, a LOT fell into place

I actually really love the Argentine version of Ernst and Hänschen. It’s humorous but there still a tenderness and genuine love in that performance
