Answering 'Tell Me About Yourself' in an Interview: Step-by-Step Guide // "Tell me about yourself" is one of the most common questions in an interview that you’ll be asked. But while it may seem like a simple prompt, many job seekers struggle to provide a concise and compelling answer.

In this video, Madeline Mann, a human resources leader and job search strategist, shares her proven formula for effectively answering “tell me about yourself” in an interview.

This is one of the most important interview questions to be prepared for because it’s an open-ended question, so it’s easy to go off track or provide irrelevant information.

However, by following a specific structure and focusing on the key elements that employers are looking for, you can craft a powerful response that showcases your skills, experience, and fit for the role.

In this video, you'll discover a three-part formula for answering "tell me about yourself" and some of our best advice for job interviews.

We provide specific examples for early-career professionals, career changers, and experienced professionals, demonstrating how to tailor your answer to your unique situation. And we also share tips on avoiding common pitfalls, such as rambling or providing too much irrelevant information.

Over the past month, I've subscribed and watched your videos in order to prepare for a career expo. Thank you so much for your incredible advice videos and I am so happy to say that your guidance landed me a government job opportunity! So many companies followed up with me after the expo and I never imagined I could be in such a position at 22 years old. Your videos are literal GOLD for career seekers! MAHALO!
  • My interview just finished a half hour ago. I still don't know the result, but thank you for your videos, they were so helpful to me!
  • You are the reason why I can find the job that I want in less than a month. Once I am in the interview process, I am almost always in. Thank you so much for everything! Greetings from Peru! ☺️

Sooo..."Tell Me About Yourself" is basically the cover letter you already sent them. Good to know.

Thank you for making your videos free to the public! I have serious interview anxiety and prior to taking your advice I'd never been able to pass job interviews, but since then I've managed to pass multiple interview rounds ❤

Thank you for the video. I have a question, I went through the final interview with the AVP. At the end of the Q&A session, the AVP asks me if I would also consider other similar roles in the company, given I have a well rounded experience. She asked me if I will be open to it, or I will only consider this position. She mentioned that at the end, it is about finding the right fit. What would be the best answer to this question?
  • When giving examples in an interview do you want to be broad on the job title, year you graduated, gross sales numbers, and what date that was accomplished?

Great video. I have my students create stories to tell with beginning, middle, and end. These stories use language from the company's job posting, mission statement, and values.

Hello, first I wanted to thank you for all of your amazing videos. It has really helped me over the years. Currently I have been on 3 rounds of interviews with a total of 5 people. The first round was from the senior recruiter via phone, the second was through webex with the hiring manager and the third was a group interview that consisted of the person that is retiring that hopefully I will be replacing, another was in charge of new construction and marketing, and the third person was part of the real estate and development team. The interview went extremely well and so I thought that was the final round but I received an email from the recruiter wanting me to do another webex, but with 2 other team members. It is for a corporate office position for a senior living community. At this point, I don't know what else they are looking for or what other questions they would like to ask. Is it common or rare to have 4 rounds of interviews?

Dear Madeline, thanks a lot for the useful structured formula and examples from different level of experience. Could you discuss about a case where a candidate "come back" to a role that they drop for a few years (especially in long range as 10 years)?
  • @Herf-et5ls
How do you approach this question when it comes to a team working assessment activity that has other candidates, since an introduction that is too focussed on career relevant stuff seems a bit too stiff and unnatural
  • Thank you lol! I have an interview next Monday and had no idea what to say for this question.
  • Ive got horrible interview anxiety and ive been with my job almost 20 yrs.
