In this video, I give the best answer to the job interview question "tell me about yourself". This is the best way I've ever seen to answer the "tell me about yourself" interview question. I also give a sample example answer to this question. This is applicable to both a fresh graduate, as well as a professional with years of experience.

Tell Me About Yourself | Best Answer (from former CEO):
This is my first video in my series on Getting Hired. I will be exploring all the common job interview questions, including "tell me about yourself" - the most common job interview question - usually used as the icebreaker at the beginning of every job interview. Please see the other videos in my "Get Hired" playlist for more tips.

One of the most common interview questions, there are many forms of this question:
Tell me about yourself.
Tell me something about yourself.

There is a big difference between what you learn in business school, and what you need to know in the real world – just ask any startup founder or business owner! My goal is to focus on the real-world aspects of business, giving practical tips and tricks that are not usually covered in school.

This channel is a platform to help entrepreneurs and business owners succeed. It is also to help the world at large to be more effective and successful. The world can certainly use more inspiring leaders, more successful entrepreneurs, and more capable managers - that is what I would like to help bring about.

Who Am I?
I am a practicing management consultant, former CEO, and entrepreneur. I have led many businesses to success, as well as several startups. Among other things, I have a master's degree in finance.

I have worked across five industries, and have worked in both large enterprise and small businesses. In the last five years, I have also been mentoring startup founders and teaching business at a post-graduate level.

Why I Want To Involve My Community:
The only way this channel will succeed is with YOUR help. In order to know how best to proceed, I need constant feedback from YOU. What topics should I cover? What challenges are you facing? What questions do you have? What changes should I make?

Please contact me with questions, and I will try my best to help. Best of luck!

Why I Need Your Help:
It is also very important to me that this channel be financially independent, and not be sustained by corporate sponsors. That way, I can be objective and honest, without having to serve interested parties, or disguise promotions as “advice”. My professional reputation is very important to me. I will invest the money raised back into the video making process. Your support will allow me to continue producing videos on a regular basis, and with increasing quality and usefulness.

Thank you for being here and reading this, and have yourself an amazing day!

Tell me about yourself. “Well, I was born at a very young age. But enough about me. Tell me about you. “

  • @MaximBordyug.
My mom used to tell me "remember, they're just people." This helped me relax, be myself and be more conversational.
  • I was interviewed when I applied for the Illinois State Police, back in ‘84, by the district commander, a lieutenant, and the senior master sergeant, who sat behind me where I could not see him. It was a very long interview, technically an interrogation, since they asked many probing questions about my personal life. The final thing asked was “Where do you see yourself in twenty years?”, by the district commander; I told him that I intended to be in his job by then. An idiotic thing to say. I found out later that that answer was the single thing that decided the interview, because though the district commander didn’t like the answer, the lieutenant, and the master sergeant, who was silent the entire time, convinced the district commander that if I had the guts to be that honest, they needed to approve me. As it turned out, many years later I retired from that same district as the senior master sergeant.

If you don't get a job because you like a different sports team as the interviewer, you've avoided working for a psychopath, congrats

"Tell me about yourself" isn't an icebreaker, it's a glacier to cross.
  • @coolhand67
I once started answering that question with “I was born...”, I still shudder at the memory.

After numerous failed interviews, I came across your videos and used your tips to finally land my first engineering job out of college. And now I tell everyone I know looking for a job to go to your channel.

All these interview videos are directed to high value jobs and I'm over here nervous for an interview for a warehouse.
  • @ericsmith-sx8xi
The first time i was asked that question, i was dumbfounded. I told them my hobbies etc...i didn't get the job. Ask a stupid question, you get stupid answers.

Last year I was interviewed for a managerial job at Dick's Sporting goods, I used this technique with the hiring manager. It was painfully obvious that the hiring manager hadn't read my resume or cover letter at all. On top of that he was fifteen minutes late for the interview. I started off using this technique but ended up explaining my entire history to him and by the end of the interview I realized I was radically over qualified for the job. I was invited back for another interview but I felt like the management wasn't organized nor did they take their potential employees time seriously. Oddly the hiring manager being so poorly organized he saved me by making me realize I would never want to work for that company, ever.
  • Tell me about yourself, "I'd rather not, I really need this job"...
  • @whaler3232
"Tell me about yourself" - Just recap your resume in 45 seconds. This is really good advise and is simple and easy to understand.
  • @marycera1530
I'm not interviewing but this guy is articulate, energetic, and interesting.
  • @lotanto6154
This guy's voice is the perfect voice to have in a interview. He sounds bold and charismatic without sounding like he is too introverted or too extroverted.

  • This was helpful when I was preparing for an interview in June this year. I went in confident during the interview. Lo and behold this was the FIRST QUESTION and I answered it well. It absolutely helped me. I GOT THE JOB!
