Albert Ellis was a famous American psychologist who developed Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), which is kinda CBT’s daddy, REBT is the Madonna to cognitive-behavioral therapy’s Lady Gaga. In his theory, Ellis identified 3 "musts'' that people often hold, which can contribute to emotional distress. And that’s what CBT is all about- changing thinking patterns to improve your mental health.
The "musts" are a set of rigid, absolute beliefs that people hold about themselves, others, and the world around them. There are three main "musts" in Ellis's theory, which are:
"I must do well and be approved of by everyone I meet. Or else I’m no good.”
“Others must treat me fairly and kindly and always consider my feelings. If they do not treat me this way, they are not good people and deserve to be punished.”
“I must always get what I want, when I want it. And if I don’t, I’m miserable”

  • Thank you for this. So important! Especially with so much social media and social approval “requirements” that happen this day in age. I needed to hear this tonight. Hard not to give our power to our closest friends or those we love who we feel ‘disapproval’ from. 🙏
  • @Libra8410

Agreed with everything you said. Albert Ellis was REBT though which is still super helpful. I teach it to clients
  • I opened the video and at the beginning I was shocked by the fact that this theme was first time approached in your video. It took me some time to think otherwise!

My parents created a lot of my lifelong depression by insisting from the time I was a little kid to be worried about what others thought of me . I was to be putting on a performance to induce others to like me I guess. - it doesn't work . Even coming to this realization in my teen years didn't help lessen the depression .
  • @lillybits9726
I would have liked to hear about the other 2 patterns as well. Are you planning on doing more shorts for those?😊
