About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist/believe

Depression is an experience and NOT an identity!!! That says all!! ❤❤❤
  • @micheller6804
I'm 41 years old and have been clinically depressed since age 4 or 5. I was seen by a psychologist in first grade, and since then, have been to many therapists, and have tried a number of medications. I understand what you are saying about it not being an identity, yet it has been such a part of me for so long, I don't know where depression leaves off, and the healthy part of me begins. I don't remember a time before depression.

Too scared to tell people that I think I might be depressed. Not trying to get therapy because people will know. This video helped, thank you
  • Everytime I watch these videos, I cry because you really make me feel like it's okay to feel anxious, to feel depressed, sad, and even just to feel like I can be human. Nobody deserves to be told "Get over it." Like I was told, multiple times, and I won't back down on my true, authentic feelings, Nor will I ever let someone say the words "You're too sensitive." "It's the past." Or "You're being immature." Just because I spoke out against abuse, and I will forever be scared by these experiences, but now, nothing will come between my self love, ever again because of you. As I write this, tears of relief roll down my cheeks. I feel soo blessed to have found out about your channel. Thank you very, very much, Miss Mcadams.😊✨

It’s the look in your eyes, it’s kindness.you are genuinely compassionate. Thank you for all your advice ❤️

Unrealistic expectations can cause depression; self acceptance is the foundation of good self esteem. It’s not to be confused with resignation of your current flaws or problems, for it is the opposite to resignation, for it empowers positive change and produces optimal results by eliminating performance anxiety. You are perfect as you are, you are evolving, you are a working progress.

Psychedelic mushrooms really healed me years back. These are great healing compounds! When used in proper context.

In case nobody ever tell you, you are born to be a therapist Emma. Listening to you give me hope to move forward, especially the part about Journaling. Thank you❤
  • @kylemos1088
100 percent agree with this. I find medication helps take the edge off when going through a depressive episode but therapy and changing the way you think helps tremendously and is the final piece in the puzzle. It just takes time and I feel that's where most people get stuck. I thankfully have family members who are helping me through my depressive episode but they always tell me it will end and my brain just needs time, therapy, mindfulness etc to develop healthy ways of thinking. Very beautifully said and I am happy I found your channel:) God sent!

Underlying feelings of anger, guilt and loss of freedom( in many capacities ) could also be causation

After having depression throughout my life I gave meditation a shot and the spiritual path. I only take on board what sits well with me and leave the rest.....I also think being out in nature helps even if it’s a quiet walk around the park. Love your videos and thanks so much for all your advice and suggestions! 💕💕💕

You are literally just brilliant. Im suffering from the effects of acute anxiety after a prolonged period of stress and have subsequently developed severe depression with paranoia and black & white thinking. Your videos and your passion for your subject is inspiring.

  • Sometimes it seems like I’ll always be dealing with depression. This really gives me hope.
  • I was just going to comment how understandable and concise your videos are...then realized they are therapy in a nutshell😁, truth in advertising! These are a nice addition to the mental health toolbox, thank you!
