Adding 96 Holes In My Workbench!

Published 2024-03-09
I build an MFT style workbench top. It is made out of MDF and I use a hole boring jig from Woodpeckers.

My name is Matt and I am on a mission to build quality furniture with economical tools in a small shop. I will have build videos and shop upgrades. Check out some of my other videos below!

This is great work. I also drilled a hole in the table top, but I did it completely by hand. I'll have to look into the jig you used too. I enjoyed the video. I'm subscribing.

For MDF worktops I recommend BLO as a finish. It's cheap, works well, and can be reapplied when necessary.

Thanks for sharing! You are right in the need to clamp it well each time. I would also share not to use a Festool router for this. The way they hold the templet bushing, while convenient, allows for small bushing movement which lead to wrong sized holes. :( I am interested in your little centering puck for marking holes. Something you made?
  • I dound that urethane holds up pretty well, but what hilds uo the best is laminate, after tons of ruined tops, i got some black formica and laminated all my tops, glue pops off, paint wipes off, doesnt dent.

Rubio monocoat is the only finish you should put on your mdf worktop 😛 All jokes aside, great job and I’m curious what you think of the 3d printed part. I have a 3d printer and might try it out if you recommend it. Did you find that on Printables or Thingiverse?

Can you link the 3D print file for tracksaw
  • I finieshed my MDF MFT Top with a standard worktop oil. It works just fine. The reason was, I still had some, just enough to finish the MFT top.

Nice job. I use the parf guide mk II for all my MFT tops. The woodpecker jig can be a bit tricky to get an accurate hole pattern. The holes are slightly oversized so you end up with holes misaligned by a fraction of a mm or so, which isn't a huge deal, but it does add up. As for a finish, dewaxed shellac is the way to go. Durable enough for worktops, easy to apply, dries very quick. I used to use zinsser sealcoat, but now mix my own from flakes. I honestly don't think the 3d printed hinge will hold up, but I do look forward to seeing how it does over time. Thanks for posting!
