How to fix a broken headstock cheaply! I am definitely not a luthier, but the guitar ends up playable again. Not pretty, but playable!

I'm 12 years old and my dad bought me a guitar a few month ago, and now it has a damage as yours and because i'm just a minor i don't have a money to let someone fixed it so i got scared because i don't want to be scold by my parents and i also don't want my dad to think that i don't value what he give so i think maybe their is a video that will teach me how to fix it on my own and i found your video and i'm glad that i know it can be fix on my own so thank you😊😊😊 (by the way english is not my first laguage so i apologized for my wrong grammar)

Thanks for sharing! My £200 guitar broke in the exact same way after it fell down. A professional repair would cost just as much as the guitar, if not more. I have looked at professional repair videos but I don’t have the right tools like a router and a customised jig. I like your method of inserting 2 dowels to strengthen it. Will definitely give this a go.
  • I just dropped my fairly cheap guitar, as I do at least once a week, and today the headstock breaks off. I hope it will be a simple task to repair. Thanks for the video.

one of mine suffered a similar injury. looking to give this a try. much appreciated
  • I wonder if a couple SS pins would help. I getting a Yamaha soon and the headstock on it is broken off also so I'm glad your here to refresh my brain.

I just got a brand new guitar and it fell and the headstock broke off of it and took off a decent chunk of the neck too and I feel so bad about it😭

Bought a acoustic guitar with the headstock split a part. The problem is that the split is almost perfect, like they sawed it in a vertical line, I tried to glue with contact glue (best glue the construct shop worker recommended me), a week later, splited again. Dunno how to repair, especially because the singular way the two parts are separated. Pls someone can help me???
  • The dowel pins were unnecessary, and likely created two weak spots instead of adding strength. The repair would have been less noticeable left unpainted.

next time instead of dowels, you could use bolts with aircraft nuts, then wrap it with black tape.

We used to do a similar procedure in-shop but found that the longevity of this type of fix was not adequate to maintain a professional reputation. These days the accepted industry fix is using brown or hide glue AND routing 2 splines into each side of the truss rod to a depth of almost half an inch by 5 inches long. Splines run parallel to the truss rod along either side. That provides the necessary strength for long term or vintage guitar restoration. Quite a bit harder to pull off, but works every time.

good job! I wish you were nearby--i just received a china archtop guitar with broken off headstock.

Would the dowels not be better at an angle, as in bottom left to upper right at 2:13?

Very charming in all ways- thanks for the informative post!

Thanks for the video and the update showing how well it held up!
  • so I have a question mine broke like that but while I was trying to tune my guitar n the strings where not even tight at all some was still loss was just wondering couse this is my first guitar is it something I did wrong or was ther maybe a crack on it already or was it made out of cheap wood maybe
  • @jeffhigh2
Ok I'm going to say this not as a criticism, but in case someone looks at this video and decides to follow your example. This was an ideal break for a simple glue repair, with plenty of surface area. Polyurethane glue is not appropriate, titebond original or equivalent would have done a better job and cleaned up with water rather than sanding Dowels in this location are totally ineffective and just made the repair look worse. A simple glue repair with Titebond original and a little better clamping and positioning would have been completely effective and not required overspray
