The Ending of Black Mirror Season 6 Episode 1 "Joan Is Awful" (2023) Explained. The episode that predicted the SAG-AFTRA Strike.

The end of Black Mirror’s Joan Is Awful actually explained. The brilliantly comedic and dark episode, directed by Ally Pankiw and written by Charlie Brooker. The episode that's about Joan (Annie Murphy) who has her life recorded and turned into a series on the new streaming platform Streamberry. After her friends and loved ones see Salma Hayek portray the more sinister version of Joan, Joan is fired from her job like how she fired Sandy (Ayo Edebiri), she is left by Krish (Avi Nash and or Himesh Patel), and things got more weird with Mac (Rob Delaney). But the biggest crime here was how Eric (Jared Goldstein) prevented us from finally seeing Sea of Tranquility on Streamberry. After causing a scene at a wedding, Joan catches Selma's attention and the two of the sneak into the Streamberry HQ to destroy Mona Javadi's (Leila Farzad) quantum computer or "quamputer". And Joan apparently makes it out without getting in serious trouble, as she goes on to open her own coffee shop appropriately named Joans Coffee.

In this analysis, explanation, commentary, and reaction, I answer the most asked about questions and reveal the episode connections/hidden Easter eggs. Like, the app Smithereen reintroducing us to the cancelled Tusk the Kid from Hated in the Nation, and Lacie Pound take pictures of food like that one scene from Nosedive. And of course, address the meaning behind them playing the song Anyone Who Knows What Love Is by Irma Thomas. At times, compare the episode to the ending of Fifteen Million Merits. My favorite but was seeing Streamberry's selection of documentaries like Inside Project Junipero (San Junipero), Loch Henry Truth Will Out, and of course Finding Ritman (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch).

When you consider how much Joan's behavior was exaggerated in the Salma Hayek version it makes you wonder how much they exaggerated the Annie Murphy version compared to Source Joan

“Joan Is Awful” was the most interesting BM S06 episode that I enjoyed. It was definitely “black mirror”-ish content. Made me remember the older episodes.

I kinda thought twist was gonna be that the entire thing was some kind of simulation that her therapist had put her through to help with her mental health. Like she said she didn’t feel like the main character of her own life, so the simulation showed her what that would be like. I guess that’s kinda played out at this stage with Black Mirror though so I’m glad it wasn’t actually that.

This episode felt the most true to its roots in the Black Mirror universe. I can't get enough of these social commentary tech horror nightmares. A lot of the episodes this season weren't that and it disappointing to me personally. Good season overall though.

I can't wait for you to do the rest of the episodes but especially demon 79, that one is a personal favorite.

Loved the part where Annie Murphy asks who is Annie Murphy😂😂😂

For some reason I'm hoping they make an episode for Sea of Tranquility, just to give the fictional show more background 😅🥰 Great video bryce!!!

I’m honestly shocked I haven’t seen Beyond the Sea in this list yet. Not so much about Mazey Day and Demon 79 (even if you mention Michael Smart), but really shocked about that episode not popping up yet. I remember watching it and thinking “I can’t wait to see his review on this”

Some people were not fans of how Salma Hayek was depicted, but I think it completely makes sense that it wasn't actually her. It was just how AI conceptualizes her, with all those random spanish words thrown around and those funny curses. Like when she calls herself "a dyslexic talented actress with questionable English" definitely sounds like a robot or something.

This episode showed how no matter what you do, feel or think people are gonna think and feel what they want and take it how they want…

One part in the ep that got me thinking.. the scene where michael cera shows up and explains to joan (annie murphy) about how the world they live in is simulated by AI based off source Joan -- what conversation was happening in real life? 😮

i think it also makes a point about how negative we as a society are. i mean, its nothing we can rlly blame anybody for. theres a reason why dramas, literally just being drama, appeal to us so much. we obsess over what's negative too much often, and that's jus kinda how it is

What I can’t figure out is why nobody else is freaking out like Annie-Joan was. Like everybody was so cool about it. Mainly the assistant. Like why he ain’t flip out and try to find source assistant? Why wasn’t Krish curious about source Krish?

Ive missed his Black mirror episodes but when season 6 came out i was glad because his reviews are awesome

Does anybody else remember that Netflix subtly changed their loading screen from an N to an S when this season came out? It was only for the first day I think

The very fact that a part of the SAG strike is how they want to pay background actors for one day of work and use their likeness in other works, just proves this can happen. That's the craziness of Black Mirror that it takes ideas that are very real, maybe enhances it but still it's not that far off

I'm just gotta say I'm so proud of your video evolution Bryce, you had great analysis videos a few years ago and they just continue to get better. And you show your face now!! (It's been a while, dumb algorithm). And the analysis of this, incredible as always!
