Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23, 1953 into an artistic, bohemian household in Chicago, Illinois. The eldest of five children born to Charles Stevens and Sandra Coleman, she has described her father as a beatnik. Beatniks were members of a social movement in the 1950s and early 1960s who subscribed to an anti-materialistic lifestyle. They rejected the conformity and consumerism of mainstream American culture and expressed themselves through various forms of art, such as literature, poetry, music, and painting. She was raised in the Hyde Park area, an island in Chicago's rough South Side housing projects.

I know this is just from an 80's fan, but I didn't know or maybe didn't pay attention to your substance abuse and most of your history in life, but hearing about the Fentanyl addiction along with heroine use, I have to say I am proud you fought those demons. My son is going through his addiction and cannot stop as much as he tried. I pray everyday for him and hope that he get what you had to stop and continue your sober life. I have to say I am extremely proud of you in all you have accomplished in live with all those obstacles. You are a beautiful woman. much love.
  • Hi Ms. Khan, I'm Vincent formerly the Bass Player for Lakeside from Dayton, Ohio. I'm 70 years old now, but I was always inspired by your super talent both singing and on stage performances. You are an inspiration to so many people all around the world. There will never never ever be another artist like Chaka Khan. Be Blesses!!

Man..Chaka can sing! I went to her concert in Indiana, plus she gave a free concert in Chicago to thank her fans..it was awesome! She is blessed..she still hits high notes and she won't disappoint! Love you Chaka! ❤❤❤
  • I have been a fan since the mid 1970's. I still listen to "Tell Me Something Good" and "Sweet Thing" on a regular basis. I love that she sang back up vocals to rock artists like Steve Winwood on his hit song "Higher Love." Her collaboration with many other artists has always impressed me, that voice and her incredible talent make her one of my favorite entertainers. There is no one else like Chaka!

I worked at the airport and Chaka and the group checked in for the flight to LAX. I was stunned to see her, my idol. She was so pleasant and nice and not the least proud or anything. She even helped with the luggage. She spoke German to me when she found out I was from Germany. She lived there a few years. Just a super nice person !!

When I was ,15 I saw Rufus and Chaka in 1975. It was the best band and featured singer I had ever seen. Forty eight years later I'm still a big fan. She's a living legend and an icon.❤️

She's a living legend and her talents hit just as hard today as they did 50 years ago. We are blessed to have her sharing her gift with us! 🎉🌹💐🌷🌺🌸🌹💐 Who doesn't love her? Who doesn't have to stop and listen when she sings. And she can sing anything! She's brilliant, talented and gifted.

I grew up hearing Chaka's infectious voice as a child and instantly became a lover of her gift. I saw her in concert in Texas shortly after Prince pass away. The highlight for me was us making eye contact throughout the concert as I danced the night away. This was truly one of the greatest highlights of my life. 💜💜💜

Chaka Khan is the first female artist. I ever bought in my youth. She is very under rated, I still enjoy her music today.

Chaka Khan is my favorite singer of all time. Her voice is amazing and can never be duplicated. I’m only 39 and she is the 1st singer I listen to when I get in my car and go somewhere. I’m proud to say I am a fan. Chaka Khan is definitely the mother of all voices. I didn’t grow up listening to her but I became a fan of her when I became an adult. There will never be another Chaka Khan 💚
  • I met and saw her first husband, Hassan Khan, regularly at the salon I worked at for years! Very nice guy. I was first made aware of Rufus and Chaka Khan's music via my older sister and brother. She and my sister are a year apart! 😊

I was acquainted with Yvette at Calumet High School and ran into her occasionally in our Chicago ‘hood.. We were both in the Calumet Afro American Student Association. Yvette and her sister, Yvonne wore Afros and were considered militant by some. I was proud and happy when I heard of Yvette’s aka Chaka Khan’s success! I became a big fan!

Chaka has always been “IT” for me! So funky and soulful! Often imitated but never ever duplicated!

Can't Nobody do it better than Chaka. Not even close. One of a kind Living Legend. A stunning beauty, strong, sensitive, vibrant, and wise woman. I've listened to her over many years in interviews, and her music is soul stirring. I am and will forever be a Chaka Khan fan.

Always loved her voice. I was a big fan of Rufus & Chaka Khan. I bought all their LP's. I got to see Chaka in concert once at the Capitol Center in Maryland. Rufus is still on my playlist. Chaka's voice is in a class of it's own, I can't compare it to anyone else's.

Chaka is one of the most influential artistes of her generation and, arguably, one of the greatest musical performers of all time. I have seen her live on hosts of occasions. One of the most memorable was her appearance at the St Lucia Jazz Festival in 2015. She was clean, so her dancing was co-ordinated and almost regal in execution. Best of all was her voice, she raged up and down the scales like an infant on a playground slide, but what she made to look effortless was actually a demonstration of divine talent and painstaking work and rehearsal. Chaka, we salute you. Our Forever Queen of Funk👑
  • I met Chaka with her grand daughter at Agápe Spiritual Center in Los Angeles. We took photos together. Very gracious!
