Is Melchizedek a priest-king in Salem, the pre-incarnate Christ, Shem, an angel, a heavenly redeemer, or the Holy Spirit? Various Jewish and Christian traditions identity him as all of these. In this video, Chad Bird draws upon his two years of research into ancient literature about Melchizedek. He takes us through the OT and NT evidence, the Dead Sea Scrolls, 2 Enoch, Josephus, and Philo to help us better understand this mysterious figure and to identify why he played such a prominent role in the Letter to the Hebrews.
Here is Chad's thesis:

  • Thank you brother Chad this is the most detailed explanation and information regarding Melchizedek which I have been searching for many years!
  • Since watching this two years ago I have been in my own study of who I have come to understand as the Order of Melchizedek. A priestly order unlike that of Levi not by birth or genealogy but by Divine appointment. Watching this video again it makes so much more sense. (Proverbs 25:2) שלום
  • I appreciate your concise and thorough research. So glad you included the recent information from the dead sea scrolls. Thank you! Great presentation.
  • My favorite part is when I made the connection that both Malchezedek and Yeshua both did communion. Malchezedek with Abraham, Yeshua with His Apostles. 🕊
  • A wealth of information, excellently presented. Bravo and thank you.

  • This an excellent teaching of the the Melchizedek priesthood. I have been fascinated by the scriptures that mention it for years. I learn so very much from you and look forward to all that you teach. You will be in my area speaking this fall and I plan to come and see your talk. Thank you!

Amazing. I love getting a legit and unbiased hermeneutic from someone knowledgeable and passionate. Thank you!
  • I am so glad you add that statement at the end. I just started really learning about the Bible around four years ago. Maybe because I’m a retired teacher, I do my own research and I bring Xeroxes of articles from my own books and I print articles from websites where there is an expansion or just a simple explanation of what we are learning in class. My current teacher totally ignores the printed material that I pass out to my classmates. I have an image I use with friends sometimes—“Bible blinders.” I just recently brought in an essay on the different approaches used to study the Bible, and I think it’s a shame that students wear these blinders and are taught to intentionally ignore other sources that could help elucidate what they’re reading.
