0:56 great video as always, thanks - I'm just really confused about the origin of coconut oil now 😅
  • @truewantsaband
Free radicals cause cell oxidation. Oxidation is the body’s rusting process -that’s such a great way of explaining it. Thanks for this video!

High corn consumption also correlates with less brain serotonin. There were population studies in the 1970s that correlated higher corn consumption with higher levels of violent crime — but correlation is not causation. (These studies also had racist/xenophobic undertones in an era that searched for pathological explanations to inequality caused by policy choices). Anecdotally, I correlate qualitative improvement in my migraines and depression with reduced corn intake.
  • Hello, Dr. Marks. I am a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes educator and am a big fan of your work. You did an outstanding job on this topic. I have been trying to educate physicians and the public about trans fats since the 1980's when much of this information was in its infancy. The Mediterranean diet, which I think has the best evidence for being a great way to eat, is also a great way to minimize trans fats. For those new to the diet, I found America's Test Kitchen cookbooks on the Mediterranean diet to be a great resource. They now have two standard recipe books and a third for Instant Pot. Keep up your most excellent work!

In Spain we pour olive oil over our toasts and tastes amazing!! (not as much as in the video though). You can try it with salt or sugar on top to taste :) Awesome and superuseful video!! I really enjoy how scientifically oriented all your videos are. Thanks a lot ^^
  • @RedisFun2
This was such a great video. You explained this in a simple and understandable way. I've never really understood why transfats and partially hydronated oil was so "bad". Most doctors will simply say it clogs arteries. And in a sense that's true. I also like how you referred to oxidized as the body's rusting process. Thank you for some really good information!

I am old so I watched this whole controversy of “good” and “bad” fats unfold. I never understood it properly until this video. Dr. Marks connects all the snatches of information so I can understand the history, and what I can eat safely for my mental health. I had to watch parts of the video twice, and turned on subtitles so I can really learn it.

I had no idea these foods could cause or exacerbate depression and anxiety. I have dealt with mental health issues for 20 years and knew to avoid “bad” foods but not the impact they could have on your mental health!
  • @marenas7870
What a great video! This was so informative and comprehensive, from discussing the basic chemistry, to recommended dietary intakes, to federal regulations/their implications. Each time I had a question pop up, you would answer it. Thanks for sharing!

I been working on refining my whole foods plant-based diet. Far from perfect I am with it, after a time it is now easy to not eat animal products, the whole food's part is more difficult as refined grains and sugar are in so many things and, as you pointed out, so are oils. I enjoy your videos and not just because you are absolutely beautiful to look at and hear talk, but for content. Your awesome.
  • Fantastic, Dr. Marks. Better than my organic chemistry classes. Thank you.
  • @Megan6772

Wow! I'm glad she didn't want to "complicate" things! But it's easy to understand why she's got 'Dr.' in front of her name. She knows a lot of stuff!
  • @DJAlienCat
Thanks for your research, Dr. Tracy Marks! These videos on gut health have given me new info & direction.
  • @rem97881
I am so grateful I found your channel! I just finished grad school and and working towards becoming a licensed mental health counselor. We did not discuss the effects of diet on mental health in any of my classes. I can't believe CACREP didn't require this. Thank you!
  • @davidtolle9533
