Did you know that elephants get much less cancer than humans, despite being 100-times larger? Often times, solutions to the toughest questions in medicine can be found in nature. Dr. Carlo Maley, an evolutionary and cancer biologist, discusses how nature has already beaten cancer, and the possibility of using those methods in humans.

Dr. Carlo Maley applies tools from evolutionary biology and ecology to tumors in order to understand and prevent the evolution of malignancy and therapeutic resistance.

While interested in all cancers, Dr. Maley currently works on Barrett’s esophagus, acute myeloid leukemia, lung cancer, and breast cancer. In this work, his team uses measures of the rate of evolution in the tumors to predict which patients will develop malignancy and succumb to their disease. He is also working on novel approaches to prevent the evolution of resistance and transform cancer from an acute disease to a chronic, non-lethal disease. His team is working on comparative oncology to discover how large long-lived organisms like whales and elephants are able to prevent cancer much more effectively than humans.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Elephants don't eat sugar, definitely, no refined foods, move all day long and probably have periods of fasting all year around!
  • I have cancer, my own opinions are cancer grows in the environment we create for it. What we feed ourselves both mentally and physically is our cause of most cancer. I believe we can beat if we focus on a few things diet, exercise, stuck emotions and positivity

ELEPHANTS don't illegally dump chromium-6 on their neighbors.

The only other animal that seems to get the most cancer is dogs, maybe cats. We on occasion feed them what we eat. Correlation?
  • @outdoormatt2177
Just completely forget to mention that all those animals eat natural diets.

b.s.! My grandmother took aspirin for years and developed lung cancer. Animals in nature don't get cancer because they live according to their true nature.... they don't cook their food, eat fake food, don't worry about money or relationships or care what they look like! They don't feel sorry for themselves or hate others. They move their bodies and get fresh air and sunlight daily! They don't do sedentary work for 8 hours a day, and they definitely don't worry about finding a cure for disease!! They do what they want, when they want according to the ebb and flow of nature - they are authentic!

Whales and elephants just haven't been bombarded with Roundup yet.

This comment section is really encouraging. You guys rock. I'm so proud of humanity. We're really waking up. No more lies. LOVE YOU!!! ;*

this is a commercial for Aspirin! get off all processed foods!

Doctors use therapies that big pharma researches, produces, teaches, and pays them to use on their patients. It's all about money, first and foremost. Good doctors are as trapped in this system as their helpless patients. But there are doctors, however few and far between, that know how to kill many cancers. The body does the real work, with the proper dietary intake and suplimentation. Western medicine has its place, but it is behind the curve. Fasting kills cancer cells, but not normal cells. Ketones kill cancer cells, while sugar feeds them. A strong immune system fights cancer, while chemotherapy destroys the immune system. A diet high in veggies and lacking in processed food helps one avoid cancerous cellular growth. Thanks to the Internet for providing a venue for so much valuable informatiin.

It's amazing how these guys giving these presentations are acute in avoiding the elephant in the room. DIET!!

Sometime cancer develops real quickly , other times over decades . The pace of the cancer growth and its strength , depends on the overall metabolic circumstance & health of each individual at the onset !

I wish they'd put all this energy in natural foods and herbs@

2021 people still dying of cancer! no cure. This is medical failure and good business.
  • Amazingly good and needed, we need to educate ourselves to a much higher degree, this kind of knowledge should be taught in every school. Thankyou

The keto diet has drastically reduced my chronic inflammation. Aspirin has many adverse side effects, and in order to take aspirin regularly, you have to take proton pump inhibitors which in turn have serious side effects. A diet without sugar and minimal carbohydrates solves the inflammation problem with no adverse side effects.
  • @richardf911
We've already found many ways of suppressing cancer. The food and drug industries would have to change dramatically to institute the changes.
  • I'm really grateful that there are scientists passionately working to pry open evolutionary secrets in order to reduce suffering. Personally, I am vegan in expectation that a well nourished body, mostly free of environmental toxins and processed "foods" will be able to withstand cancerous assaults on my system. Also, apparently populations who drink a lot of green tea are more resistant to cancer, so that might be an interesting avenue to explore.

Fascinating talk. Great video! Human health choices are obviously first available line of defense. Inflammation is often self inflicted through dietary error, lack of sleep, drinking/drugging and other controllable factors. The aspirin mention was interesting. Some foods can be used instead, which contain same or similar component. Will be interesting to see if scientists can utilize the genetic data and upgrade human cells to do what the elephants and other large animal cells do to stop malignancy. Maybe a supplement can be developed somehow, to "fix" human cells in such a manner. 😎
  • What Dr. Maley never dicusses is that Elephants, Rhinos, Giraffes all eat an abundance of green vegetables. Quite intresting to think about when you know some about some of the biological effects off these vegetables.
