Yall know I love some good ol' fashioned cooking and food. Well it doesn't get any better than soup beans, over corn bread, with homemade chow chow and home cured fat back on the side. Better than cake in my opinion!

  • Great video sister. Or maybe cousin kinfolk. My Father is from Asheville NC. He moved to New York city after fighting in Korea in the Marine Corps. He married a beautiful Black girl in 1965 and was shunned by his Family. Back then it was a different America. Now I want to learn so much about him and Appalachian culture, not to be embarrassed or feel bad about it loke he sadly did. These videos of you and listening to your voice reminds me of the Grandmother who loved me unconditionally as the only member who accepted me. Thank you so much ma'am ❤

My mother was an old WVA gal. Soup beans and cornbread was a staple in our house. She used either a hambone or smoked hock. She'd cut up spring onions on the top and black pepper. My grandfather made those hams in WVA but we were living in northeast Ohio then. Good eats. Thank you your version looked awesome

Everything looked delicious. I do prefer more liquid in my soup beans but either way is terrific. We eat fried potatoes and cornbread and sometimes add coleslaw to the dinner. I love it all.

OMG...This is exactly the kind of food I grew up with. I am so tired of B.S. "southern cooking" This is the real deal. Pinto soup beans and chow-chow or corn relish is the real deal. I do not disagree with anything this woman said about this meal. I smiled so big when I watched her video. Don't know her from Adam's house cat, but she is a true southern cook.

ANY kind of beans with any kind of bread, and an onion and I have the perfect meal...but I'm the only one in my family who is that easy to please.

I love soup beans, corn bread, fried potatoes and fresh onions! I also break up the cornbread and add the beans on top! So very good!

My wife grew up in the city as did I, but our parents grew up in the country. This meal is exactly what we ate as children and our children ate growing up. Just as a time reference, we are 65 and our children are 35. The grandchildren love pintos this way!

my dad was from West Virginia, my mom was from Alabama. She always used white beans aka navy beans and a big ham hock. We had that with greens and cornbread. It's one of my favorite meals.

I also love chow chow on my soup beans ladled over crumbled cornbread. My Mamaw couldn't have pork (for religious reasons), so for extra protein she always served her vegetarian soup beans as she had enjoyed them growing up in Appalachia: with a tall glass of ice-cold buttermilk to wash them down.

Both sets of my grandparents, especially my grandfathers and my dad we all use a little bit of miracle whip in our beans specially brown beans try to see what you think

Anytime I plan cook pinto beans I refer to them as “Texas Strawberries “. That’s what my dad called and it stuck. I soaked them overnight and I put a packet of salt pork And a couple of garlic and a whole onion. In the morning I start cooking slowly until they are malty. I don’t like onions but I do like their flavor so when the beans are done I pick onions pieces and give them to my wife.
  • That was an awesome meal you fixed Megan, thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
  • You eat yours over the bread like I do. Everything looks so good! My grandma used to make chow-chow and my mom gave me her recipe. Gonna give it a try soon as we get moved back to the Midwest...couple of months. Your cornbread looks beautiful.
