Are Reverent Liturgies & Social Justice at Odds?

Published 2024-08-05
Does being committed to social justice necessarily entail neglecting the liturgy? Conversely, do reverent liturgies entail downplaying or even ignoring the Church’s mission to care for the poor? The answer to both questions is a resounding, no. How should we understand the right relationship between the liturgy of the Church and the virtue of justice, including social justice? And practically speaking, how can we, as a Church, overcome the unnecessary divisions between so-called “liberal Catholics” and “conservative Catholics”?

A listener asks if someone can be Catholic but not believe in the Resurrection.

Fifty thousand attendees! Wow! God bless! This reminded me of something; when I first went to the Catholic Church in a small city in Canada, it was around noon, I was hesitant to enter, I was alone and I didn't want anyone to know or to see me as I came from a different religious background. That was in December 2007. I took courage, I went in. The church was empty, the lights were dim, except for the light of Jesus What a sacred moment, beyond belief. I was thinking, a glorious place like this should be full of people. Well, now we're in 2024, people of the Catholic faith are increasing, drawn from God. I'm thinking that I want to live to see the day when our Catholic churches ring the bells daily, and all Catholics attend the daily mass, living happily in Christ grace, away from the devilish thought of atheism that made lives miserable. It's coming, Amen.

Social Justice must follow the Catholic Social Teaching. We catholics shouldn't let "critical theorists" and "post-modernists" hijack and deviate this concept.
  • Like the bamboo, the higher it is, the lower it stoops.. God bless Word on Fire cast crew viewers and listeners... Mabuhay

Can't wait for this talk! If I may though: we currently have a liberal priest in our parish. He changes "became man" to "became human" in the creed, and recently preached that the feeding of the 5000 wasn't a miracle, but was just people sharing with each other. Liberal liturgy isn't just about emphasizing social justice. It's about "fixing" a liturgy and a theology they perceive to be itself unjust.

Wonderful discussion. We can have beautiful, reverent liturgy and serve the poor!

I agree with Bishop Barron! Lets get back to what Varican II asked for (Latin, gregorian chant, priest still facing Ad Orientem). I'm sure he would be on board!
  • Excellent so clear because I think it all comes from your deepest being; thank you, Patricia Catholic all my life but still struggling with my own ego!!!! 🇮🇪
  • Catholic worship is based on the liturgy of the Old Testament and reaffirmed in the last Book of the Bible, The Revelation to Saint John, (The Apocalypse.
  • Thank you, very clear, helpful and interesting discussion. +
  • I offer this Rosary for Fr Chris and his family members. Lord Heal his Parents. Bless and Protect them All Amen

I am a TBI (traumatic brain injury) person and I appreciate my brain as a vital organ now than I did before I had the accident. Spiritual intelligence is critical to physical health 😂
  • Thank you for your commitment to unite the liturgy and social justice

I pray schools continue putting the 10 commandments so kids learn proper values
  • Some times I have to pray very hard for faith. I hated God when he called my sister Linda Lou home. I was mad, and God had a pretty good laugh you done. It took months. I went to a talk about getting through the first holidays with out your love one. I found out it was OK to feel the way I did.
  • This was a wonderful conversation, in which Bishop Barron portrays the relationship between Christian faith and action in terms that are identical to the way in which my own denomination, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), understands this relationship, theologically and sacramentally. Presbyterians view the church's liturgy in Word and Sacrament as "equipping the saints" to be the Body of Christ in the world. Presbyterians also view Matthew 25 as the "must" that connects, in reciprocal relationship, the worship of God to caring for the poor. As a Minister of Word and Sacrament, my role is to equip "each member to be the Church in the world," as the Confession of 1967 expresses it; and then on Sunday to encourage each member to bring the world's hurts before God for Christ's healing and redemption. Thus is the Church engaged in the continuous rhythm of faith and action. Thank God we are all in this blessed ministry together.
  • His talk was very good as were app of them. Time to watch it again…
  • Rental J. Weems's book on "What matters most" drew me closer to God and helped my spirituality. 2021 was a year I literally lived it. I cashed in my life savings and gave it all away. My total giving amounted to 40,000 dollars. Everyone thought I was delusional. Today I receive 85,000 dollars every two months. I have a property in Calabasas CA and travel alot. God has promoted me more than once and opened doors for me to live beyond my dreams. God kept to his promises to and for me.
