Strength for the Journey - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Published 2024-08-10
Friends, we’re continuing our reading of the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John, which is all about the Eucharist. And here’s my take on our reading for today: A long trip by car or plane can be uncomfortable, even overwhelming. But we’re heading somewhere else; we’re on a journey. And on a long journey, you have to find sustenance to keep going.

Mass Readings
Reading 1 — 1 Kgs 19:4-8
Psalm — Ps 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
Reading 2 — Eph 4:30—5:2
Gospel — Jn 6:41-51

  • Hey friends, I hope this message reaches a few of you all. I’m currently living in a Protestant household and I have come to realize the validity and richness of the Catholic faith. I want to join through RCIA and begin the confirmation process, but my parents are quite opposed to such. I will start going to daily Mass soon, just to be in the presence of our Lord more fully. If I may, I ask for your prayers for me. Thank you all.
  • Larry Burkett's book on "Giving and Tithing" drew me closer to God and helped my spirituality. 2020 was a year I literally lived it. I cashed in my life savings and gave it all away. My total giving amounted to 40,000 dollars. Everyone thought I was delusional. Today, 1 receive 85,000 dollars every two months. I have a property in Calabasas, CA, and travel a lot. God has promoted me more than once and opened doors for me to live beyond my dreams. God kept to his promises to and for me

I didn’t realize how filthy and weighed down I was until I went to confession for the 1st time in 30yrs, and i didn’t realize how starving I was until i received the Eucharist after. Christ is King

Years ago, my elderly mother would rave and rave about Bishop Barron (BB!) who said or appeared at the Masses she attended at the Mission in Santa Barbara or Montecito. I hadn't quite returned to the Church yet and when I did return, I discovered BB and these videos and The Word on Fire--but BB was gone from our city. Rats, I just missed him! Well, thank God we have these wonderful, inspiring videos...here I am about to go visit my 97-year-old mother who is so unhappy and wants to die and she's angry that she isn't dying yet because she's so miserable with the food and housing and just tired about life. I'm going to play this video for her to encourage her to hang in there--and I think it will give her a little lift and she will be so happy that none other than Bishop Barron will be delivering this timely reminder. Thank you and God bless you BB.

God bless you Bishop. Your sermons are so encouraging. I am 81 years old. Don't watch the news. Last night I felt I should watch the news, and after I watched, I regretted watching. Why did I do that. My children and grandchildren are my joy. Going to mass and receiving the eucharist ,adoration, lunch with friends a few times a month is wonderful. But everything else is a ride long distance in a car, airplane, or a motel. Your sermon was wonderful.🙏🙏🙏
  • When Covid arrived, we suffered lockdown, lost our jobs, taking care of 91-year Diabetic Dementia Mum, dwindling savings; how many thousand times have I asked the LORD, "When will this end?! We can't do it anymore, LORD! YOU are not listening. It's falling on deaf ears." Truly, attending daily Mass has helped us endure this ongoing earthly purgatory! Thank you for this encouragement. We needed to hear it, Your Excellency. LOL, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • I just prayed The Rosary since a long time and it was amazing Feels like someone is hugging me all the time

Great message. I'm a new catholic and I absolutely love bishop Barron's sermons. Thank God for the holy men he calls to guide us 🙏
  • Saludos padre de este sacerdote. Dios te bendiga. Ahora aprendo ingles contigo mientras escucho la palabra de nuestro Señor.

If the Eucharist is our sustenance on the journey, Confessions are toilet stops. Both highly needed ✨

This homily helped me realize that I can’t make everything perfect in this life, so I should stop trying so hard and quit beating myself about it. It’s supposed to be hard here sometimes and I can’t keep that from happening. Our heavenly home will be perfect and our food for the journey will help us get there. As I reread my comments here, I know that I knew this already, but for some reason it has sunk in today and given me more hope. Thank you, Bishop Barron
