The Barnyard Brat (1939) Color Classic

Published 2020-02-24
Disobedient donkey Spunky's pranks create havoc amongst the sheep, geese and chicks until he's publicly decried; a barnyard bully is not more appreciated than a schoolyard one. But when the livestock go a little overboard with retaliation, they invite the wrath of mommy mule. One of several Hunky and Spunky adventures in the Fleischers' "Color Classics" series. -

Well, honestly, Spunky deserved that retaliation from the other barnyard animals, but still, they went a little overboard and almost killed him.

This is a classic. I was just a kid when I saw on vhs.

The Hunky and Spunky series were owned by at least three TV companies; NTA, UM&M, and Kit Parker (Walt Disney). Spunky DID appear in a cartoon with Casper the Friendly Ghost.
  • what a LOT of misbehaving people (not JUST bratty kids) should have right now!
  • this cartoon horrified me as a child with the drowning and beating done to the kid when he couldn't defend himself, very scary how the other animals easily could have killed him and then just shrugged it off as a "he deserved it"
  • The other animals judge Hunky and yet don't help her deal with him, then when he starts bothering them, they use the medieval dunking torture. The animals kept telling her the "proper" way to discipline spunky, but when they got the short end of the stick, they didn't discipline him in their "proper" way, they just went straight to drowning him. Honestly, this is a bit real because some people are so judgemental on how someone parents their children yet won't actually lift a finger to help them; those people just look down on the struggling parent and their children
  • Did anybody else notice the strange jumpcut at 1:43? It feels like something should be there. Maybe the master tape got damaged and it was cut out, or just an animation error the animation studio missed🤔
