Breaking in the van, didn't realize it was disengaging out of 4WD, or that the bumper/spare gets stuck in the dirt.

1987 Chevy 3/4 Ton G20 Van, 4x4 Pathfinder Conversion. Has a GM 9.5" rear, GM corporate 10 bolt front w/locking hubs, lifted on 33's, 350 V8, headers and dual exhaust w/Cherry Bombs, dual stabilizers, Baja lights, air horn, grill guard, CB radio. Also has tinted windows, blinds, overhead mood lighting and a rear bench that folds down into a bed...

So it wasn't really the van that failed.. It was the driver.

that could be pretty nice with some bigger tires and some lockers

I have a 77 chevy van and have been wanting to convert it to 4wd, did you do the conversion or have someone do it for you, and if you did it, did you just get a front wheel drive differential and make brackets to mount leaf springs?

Yep, therein lies the problem. Too ling if a wheel base for that sorta activity. Looks nice though :)

If its 4x4 why aren't the front tires spinning also?

The approach angle is great for most vans. Unfortunately the departure angle is another story as you can see here. Lol there is a reason 4x4 dodge stretch vans are nearly non existent.
