This is such a classic. And trust me, when you're in a crowd of people who are partying and this song comes on, it's a crowd participation moment. Sad and sweet and a shared human moment.

Hi guys I live in Adelaide South Australia. I was out one night in a piano bar for a friends birthday and the poor pianist was being talked over and ignored for most of the night. Then suddenly he played this song and everyone went quiet and at the end there was a big round of applause and cheering. It's like the song made the people realise how rude they had been to this guy who probably has spent his whole life practicing and perfecting his trade just so he can make people forget about life for a while.

The joy on your faces listening to this masterpiece is priceless...!
  • The song that introduced Billy to the world. Please try and react to Scenes from an Italian Restaurant possibly the best song he has written and performed especially the live version

"Yes they're sharing a drink they call "loneliness"/But it's better than 'drinking alone'." Such a powerful lyric. Everyone can relate, because everyone has a life story - what you did, what you deal with, what you want... but we can all unite over good music. The sad unspoken premise is that, while the Piano Man knows everyone's stories, nobody really cares about him. He can't escape life - this is his job.

What a beautiful reaction to a great classic song from an icon. Billy Joel is an American legend and this song still brings tears to my eyes with the eloquent lyrics and profound meaning. Thank you for the thoughtful reaction ♥️✌🏽

Such a beautiful song in every way. Seeing someone hear it for the first time, the genuine appreciation on your faces as you listened, made me so happy. I worry sometimes that this awesome music isn't going to be loved anymore the way we loved it then, it was the soundtrack of our lives after all, but I watch this, and I know that won't happen. Thank you both. :goodvibes:❤

Billy wrote 33 top 40 Hits 🔥🔥🔥 He wrote has some of the most beautiful ballads ever: "Just The Way You Are" "She's Always A Woman" "She's Got A Way" Billy's rock style, I will always love: "Only The Good Die Young" "Big Shot" "Its Still Rock & Roll to Me"
  • I love your reactions. I'm an American who grew up with this music, and love to see younger people discover and appreciate it. Some people, because the melody is not sad, miss the underlying sadness of the people in the bar...including the piano man. You are very insightful in your reactions. I really enjoy your channel!

This song really started his historical success. A few other great songs by him are "Just the Way You Are", "And So it Goes", "She's Always a Woman".
  • Thanks to both of you, I was having a crappy day, and once again you two put a smile on my face. Thanks for the happiness
  • New York State of Mind is my favorite Billy Joel song. The live version from the (Old Grey Whistle Stop???) Not only great piano but the saxophonist is amazing as well. Billy's vocals are amazing. Thanks guys, so great as always.✌

This was the song that launched his career in South Africa. Then he released "Honesty" and "Just the way you are", both number 1 hits in South Africa. Those early albums by Billy Joel are my favourites - so many memorable songs from both albums. I especially liked "Master Jack", "Vienna" and "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant".
  • For folks who are working all week, but haven't met that other someone, or made friends, or out lived them all... this is a place to be, instead of being alone at home. Sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it's better than drinking alone.
  • @KidBklyn
I call Billy Joel, a master lyricist. His songs are stories that reflect life. Piano Man is a perfect example of people just getting together to put life's problems on hold.

A good friend of mine made a living playing at the local hotel bar. I always think of him when I hear this song. We actually did ask him all the time "Man, what are you doing here?"
  • @AP-gb3eh
I worked a piano bar for a number of years and this song was requested to often. We had many regulars who we knew better than they realized. We knew their fears ,indiscretions, weaknesses and mostly we knew how badly they sang . Those of us who lived the song would sometimes cringe because to hear this song sober was to close to home. That being said there was a lot of fun too. People singing together is such a friendly way to blow off steam ☮️

True Story: Billy Joel had issues with his recording company (who owned his songs and his name) and had get away from NY so he, and his wife, went to live in Los Angeles for a few years until things were sorted. Since he needed work to pay the bills, but could not use his common name, he worked at a bar as a piano player using the name "Bill Martin" - which you see a poster at the end of the video. So this is his story of working as a piano player at a bar, and when he sings the line "they say what are you doing here" - well, that actually happened. Can you imagine going to a lounge and getting the calibre of this "Piano Man" while you're out drinking with friends or alone. All the stories on the song are based on people he met and observation while working at the bar.
