  • The most iconic line every songwriter wished they would have written: "And they're sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it's better than drinkin' alone...."

This is such a great story telling song. This was Billy's first single released in 1973. "Piano Man" is based on Billy Joel's real-life experiences as a lounge musician in Los Angeles. The song is sung from Joel's point of view as a piano player at a bar, reminiscing about his experiences there & the people he encountered.
  • Billy wrote this song from life experience. He wrote more then 90% of the songs that he performed.
  • @anway1953
Billy is one of the best Singer/Songwriters of all time.
  • This is Billy Joel's story, he grew up in NY (about 4 miles from me) then moved to California and his job was in a piano bar. Moved back to New York and blew up!!!!! Do "THE STRANGER" or "BILLY THE KID"
  • @tjrivers
Fire. Billy Joel IS the Piano Man. One of our most prolific and much-talented composer/singers. Loved him for over 40 years…entire catalog of amazing music. Strong, sweet and soulful.
  • @Souzawrites
The song is autobiographical about a time in Joel's career when he was in a contract dispute with his record label and rather than produce music for them under unfair terms, he worked at a piano lounge until his contract with the record label expired - hence the line "Man what are you doing here," because clearly he was too talented to just be playing bars.
  • Piano Bars were the rage of the 1960's and seventies. People would sing with the piano player and it was a lot of fun. This is a great example of this pleasure.

Not like everyone else. Not everyone can be like Billy Joel. He's a master piano man and storyteller. So glad you could appreciate him.
  • @jimwilcox2964
If you notice the posters and hotel signs in the video, thats Billy playing under another name because he was having a dispute with his record company
  • What a talent this guy is. I’ve still got his Piano Man album, which is fantastic…

  • @candimccann
This is probably the number one song on the list of "Songs that drunk (usually white) people sing loudly". That list includes Sweet Caroline, too.
  • This song brings back soooo many great memories from the 70s. Thanks for making me smile and remember
