I got detained at the Canadian border. (arrested if I go back)

We were just trying to do something good, when some power tripping customs agents who were apparently bored that day decided to throw everything they could at me. Even though both agents had completely different ideas of what these chairs were classified as, and what laws I broke by trying to bring them in to the country, both were adamant about the fact that THEY were right. After a very long detainment and a story that I will tell in full once this all blows over, it was made very clear that if I tried to bring these chairs into the country again I would be arrested on the spot.

I have to say a huge thank you to ‪@BruceCookfmx‬ for doing everything he could on his end to get the situation worked out, Chase Barber from ‪@EdisonMotors‬ for offering to hop in his pickup and drive down to the border on the spot to argue on my behalf and try to come up with a solution, and the cyber security company Aura for offering to sponsor this video in support of the project. Even though I'm not going to charge them for the sponsorship because I didn't do what I told them I would do for the video, you can still get a 2 week free trial by clicking on the link here!

Everything about this situation sucks…. Except for the fact you have a group full of friends that don’t suck… and that’s priceless
  • @jessepitt
My dad was a customs agent in the 70’s, he quit because he said he was sick of the wannabe cops power tripping constantly. He was too nice for the job.

I'm a cross-border trucker that goes through the border crossing that you tried to go through perhaps a dozen times per month. Trust me, whether it's CBSA or CBP, they are both birds of a feather. Both will royally shaft you given half the chance! The horror stories exist for all possible combinations of US/Canadian citizenship/CBP/CBSA.

So sorry for your trouble. I am a retired international trucker and I can tell you your best option is to contact Canadian Customs Broker. Have them prepare the paperwork in advance and ship the bikes across the border with a Canadian Frieght company. You are black-balled by the Canadian Customs agent and very likely for a very long time with out recourse.
  • I was the white Peterbilt that blew the air Horn when I passed you around 930am that morning
  • Thank you Ben for going to rescue Casey! You're the BEST!! 👍💯

Border/Customs creeps abound everywhere. I stopped going into the 'States from Canada many years ago, because I've never had a good one EVER. They've ALL been weird power tripping hostile and insulting. Every single last one. The last straw back in '97 was some 250 lb woman who said: "Construction workers don't get 2 weeks off" when I told her I was on my 2 week vacation, going to see the Grand Canyon. Yes, she actually said that. She kept demanding to know why I was lying about my type of employment. I was speechless.

I once asked for help declaring some personal items I was bringing home to Canada. They said they needed a value number, I said I wasn’t sure, so they asked for a number again. I said I guessed around $700 so they sent me inside to fill out paperwork and pay the duties/tax. After going through everything I have around $900 in stuff the border agent decided. I was told I lied and they seized my stuff and fined me $500 to get my stuff back on top of the taxes
  • @bcwrangler
I'm Canadian and the CBSA treats us like shit too.
  • They definitely hate Casey Ladelle. Amen to that. No good deed ever goes unpunished.

As a Canadian myself, I have had my luggage ripped open and strewed all over too on the American side. All I wanted to do was to go Florida to watch the Daytona 500 with a couple of friends and return to Canada again. It was that simple. Then I was told to either shut my mouth or be refused my entry into the USA. I am embarrassed that you were screwed around so badly but the way things are now, you almost need to talk to a Lawyer to get all the facts on what is legal before you leave. At least you can call that Lawyer if you run into problems. Sounds dumb, but our Border Guards were told a few months back to get tougher on border crossers.
  • I used to go to Canada to go fishing and spend a few thousand dollars. The last time we went before Rona we were harassed for hours and had our truck searched and torn apart. Of course they didn't find anything, but it took us for ever to put it all back away. NEVER again will they get another penny of mine!!!!!!
  • @rarelyright
Three different friends willing to drive hours to rescue you, I don’t know if you realize how truly lucky you are
  • @MichaelSteeves
Ah, the joys of bureaucracy. My experience crossing the border is that entering the US you are treated as a potential terrorist. Entering Canada you are treated as a potential smuggler.
  • @robhersey1796
In my 35 years of crossing the USA/ Canada border, I can honestly say that quite a few ( not all; I have met some really nice ones) these border agents wake up in the morning trying to come up with new ways to make people's lives miserable.

As a Canadian from Alberta. I am camping right now near the BC/Montana border. I would love to cross at Roosville, Montana, and camp south of Rexford, but it’s not worth trying to come back into Canada… especially with 2 dogs. They are complete a-holes on the Canadian side. It’s like they get offended for Canadians visiting the USA! Drove to Sturgis, Rushmore, then Vegas, 7-8 years back. Crossing at Coutts/Sweetgrass was a breeze going into the states. Coming back at the same crossing was a nightmare. Questioned us about everything, wanted to know why we went, how we spent our money, etc. in the end, they just wanted money. Glorified tax collectors are all they are.
  • @MrPerry61
I drove OTR for over 20 years, and after years of putting up with all the red tape on both sides of the border I finally refused to go into Canada as a commercial driver. that was all before 9/11 which made the red tape even worse. So I feel for you, your frustration is genuine.
  • @TokyoCraftsman
in 2018 I traveled from Japan to Canada for a visit, I'm a Canadian Citizen, and my flight took me through LAX (oh man what a $hit show that place was) then to Vancouver, and then to my hometown. At that point, I rented a car, a minivan, that had Ontario plates on it. I went to Oregon to visit friends, and got through the border to the US with just a few questions and a "Welcome to the USA". I was traveling with my adult daughter who is Canadian/Japanese. We visited friends and went back to my hometown. At the border entering Canada, we got detained. They could not read my "Japanese" driver's license, which is why I had an "International" driver's license, they wanted me to pay a $150 fee to have my Japanese driver's license translated... 🙄 which I refused to do as my International driver's license was valid. The not-so-bright border agent said that my Japanese driver's license could be anything how did he know... I pointed out that the international driver's license listed the number on my Japanese driver's license. Then they wanted to know where I went and who I visited, I told them "Friends in the US" and they wanted names and addresses, which I refused to give them. Next, they questioned why I was driving a car from BC with Ontario license plates...? I told them it was a rental and they had the car's registration, my rental agreement, etc and maybe they should ask the rental car company, I just took the car they offered. They told me it was suspicious that I was from BC but driving a car with Ontario license plates. In the meantime they had taken everything out of the car and just threw our stuff on the ground like trash, they opened up our suitcases and tossed our clothes on the ground. My daughter started to record them doing this and they took her phone and told her she would not get it back. Next, they started with my daughter who had just graduated from UBC with an engineering degree (proud papa!) as she had both a Japanese and Canadian passport, they were concerned that she did not have a visa to be in Canada, this low IQ agent actually asked her where her visa was on her Japanese passport to be allowed to be in Canada while holding her Canadian Passport in the same hand. We were detained for about four hours until an older wiser agent finally showed up, he went over everything, and he went to hand me back all of our paperwork and said we could leave, I said that we should get an apology from the other agents who made such a mess, he withdrew the paperwork and said "Shall we strip search your daughter?" (there were only male agents in attendance). I said "no" and took our paperwork back, we spent maybe 30 minutes repacking our suitcases and other stuff into the rental car and returned to my hometown. My family was outraged at the whole deal, and my mum knew the local MLA she used to babysit him, he came and talked to us, I gave him all of the details the names, etc of the people who did this and... nothing happened. The MLA later explained that the border agents were Federal and BC the province could do nothing, in fact, the border agency said they had no record of the incident. We did nothing wrong or illegal, all of our paperwork was in order, and neither myself nor my daughter has ever been arrested, not even a traffic ticket in the last 30+ years but this is how we were treated by Federal thugs with badges. Sorry for the long rant, but it's good to tell these stories, I've not told this one publicly until now because my daughter was still living in Canada and I did not want her to get any blowback, she no longer lives in Canada. Thanks for reading my story, I hope that someone gets their chit straight and lets Casey drop off the off-road non-regulated electric bikes soon. Cheers from Tokyo! PS This was all pre-¢ovid
  • Moral of the story: check out all the bells and whistles before coming to the border and bringing stuff across- either direction.
