Kendo Singing "Mairzy Doats"

Published 2024-06-17
Written by Milton Drake, Al Hoffman, and Jerry Livingston in 1943, it was recorded by the Merry Macs and went to #1 on the charts in 1944. It has since been recorded by The Three Stooges, Bing Crosby, Spike Jones, Bobby Darin, and Burl Ives. I picked it up by watching Twin Peaks.

Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wooden shoe?
Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wooden shoe?
Now if the words sound queer and funny to your ear
A little bit jumbled and jivey
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats
And little lambs eat ivy."

Kowzy tweet and sowzy tweet liddle sharksy toysters
A squiddly toysters, too, wooden shoe?
Kowzy tweet and sowzy tweet liddle sharksy toysters
A squiddly toysters, too, wooden shoe?
Now if the words sound queer and funny to your ear
A little bit jumbled and jivey
Sing "Cows eat wheat and sows eat wheat
And little sharks eat oysters."

I learned the second verse (sharksy toysters!) from Molly Whuppie's Youtube channel, the only place I could find it, though the Wikipedia article mentions Drake's 4 year old daughter originally sang them to inspire the song. It may have been an old English nursery rhyme.

This one is for the Edgette sisters, Carol and Ellen Jo.
