The Old Man of the Mountain (1933)

The Old Man of the Mountain is a 1933 animated short in the Betty Boop series, produced by Fleischer Studios. Featuring special guests Cab Calloway and His Orchestra, the short was originally released to theaters on August 4, 1933 by Paramount Productions. Calloway voices all of the characters in the cartoon save for Betty herself (talking voice provided by Bonnie Poe; singing voice provided by Mae Questel). Calloway, along with his orchestra, also perform all of the music in the cartoon, including two songs Calloway co-wrote. The villagers are scared of the terror who lives in the heights until Betty Boop arrives with an air of indifference to the local bogeyman whom she is soon to entice to his just deserts.

-In the original Cab Calloway song "The Old Man of the Mountain", the Old Man himself is described as a harmless eccentric, but, for the purposes of the cartoon, the song was changed to make the character seem more malevolent.

-He has three children by a Hippo lady which he impregnated; when Betty asks her "What's a matter?", the Hippo replies, "The Old Man of the Mountain!" while walking down the mountain crying with her three snaggle-toothed, bearded children (Which would indicate that the Hippo lady went up to the mountain before Betty and came back down with 3 children).

-His quote is referenced in the Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas by Oogie Boogie.

-The Miser from Betty Boop Big City Adventures: The Ultimate Game of Pursuit is similar to the Old Man of the Mountain.

It's so sweet how all the animals try to defend her

"So what kind of music are you into?" Me: it's complicated
  • Everyone in this cartoon besides Betty was voiced by Cab Calloway. So he's all the voices, conducts the band for the music, sings amazingly and they rototscoped his dance moves for the animation itself.

I like how cartoons before always synchronize with the music in any situation
  • I have so much appreciation for this . Computer generated animation can't be compared to hand drawn masterpieces like this .

Understand why people are obsessed with Betty Boop with her cute high pitch voice and with their sense of comedy back in the days this was kind of amusing

Is no one gonna talk about how that lady was forced to have his kids 2:03
  • @PatrickRsGhost
3:37 - And that, kids, is the inspiration for Oogie Boogie's Song in Nightmare Before Christmas.

I just realized what’s probably referenced and most disgusting is at 2:05 is that woman character was forced to have those babies with the old man as obviously what was planned to happen to Betty but she escaped
