After the PlayStation Stars outage rolled into July 2024 without an update from Sony, it was starting to feel like the PS5 and PS4 loyalty scheme was never going to get fixed. However, as many users have reported on social media sites like Reddit, PlayStation Stars has returned to the PS App in certain regions.

An update from Sony reads: "PlayStation Stars will be returning soon in phased regional rollouts. Thank you for your patience and we look forward to welcoming you back."

At the time of writing, reports suggest that PlayStation Stars has only returned online in Asia so far. The good news for those still waiting on the fix is that Sony seems to have heeded concerns regarding PlayStation Stars lost points during the 2024 outage as early reports suggest your PS Stars points should be unaffected.

There remain some lingering questions regarding the PS Stars outage that will need to be fielded at some point. At the top of the list has to be a general explanation from Sony as to what exactly happened to PlayStation Stars that might explain why the service went offline for four weeks.

The pixel wizards at Digital Foundry have dived into PS5 and Xbox Series X/S hardware to find out why many games on Sony’s console outperform titles on Xbox Series X, despite Microsoft’s console being a lot more powerful on paper.

In layman’s terms, the lower level GPU compiler featured in the PS5 is more efficient in utilising hardware, while the GPU’s faster clock speed ensures it’s running faster than the GPU featured in the Xbox Series X. As a result, it is able to perform certain tasks much quicker on Sony’s console, thus giving it an edge over its competitor in various scenarios.

However, the Xbox ecosystem does have advantages in some situations. Elden Ring, for example, runs faster on the PS5, but the Xbox Series X offers a more smoother and consistent experience when it comes to VRR due to Sony’s limited implementation of the technology for PS5.

Looking ahead, Sony is heavily rumoured to be launching a more powerful version of the PS5, dubbed the PS5 Pro, later this year, which is expected to be the most powerful games console on the market.

The next mainline Resident Evil game is in development, game director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed Monday in a video streamed by Capcom.

Nakanishi was the director of Resident Evil 7 biohazard and Resident Evil: Revelations, and also served as a designer on Resident Evil 5. In other words, Nakanishi’s games have both steered Resident Evil back toward its horror roots, while also trying to reinvent the franchise in important ways.

In confirming the new Resident Evil, Nakanishi said, “It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil 7]. But I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial.” Nakanishi said he couldn’t say more about the next game, the follow-up to Resident Evil Village, but hoped that fans will look forward to its official reveal.

2017’s Resident Evil 7 biohazard was a major turn for the franchise, shifting the action from third-person to first-person and introducing a new playable protagonist, Ethan Winters. Village, released in 2021, is said by Capcom to be the end of the Winters family saga, meaning Resident Evil 9 will likely feature the return of a classic Resident Evil hero or another brand-new character.

    Personally, I think people just love to complain. I’ve been playing computer games since the early 90’s and the reality is, we’ve never had it so good. The PS5 is an excellent console and apart from companies constantly trying to milk money out of people, modern games are great. We’re spoilt for choice really.

    My ps plus renewed while ps stars was down. I use ps credit card so I get the rewards points for the Sony website and ps stars. Hopefully the points for ps stars are shown once I can get back into stars. 🤞🏼

    I’ve been holding off on buying games. Warframe seems to also have changed their discounts from items to extra platinum. It would’ve been nice to get some cash on PSN to take advantage of the discount.
