Dr. Jordan helps us to appreciate some of the main medications used to help control Rheumatoid Arthritis. Medications such as Methotrexate, Arava, Sulfasalazine and Plaquenil take on average 2 months to see big effects.

Your Rheumatologist might use other medications in the short term to help control your symptoms.

If you have any specific questions speak to your treating Rheumatologist for more individualised advice.

It would be interesting to know the earliest likely discernible effects of these treatments. I understand about full efficacy not being reached for around two months, but can one expect some positive impact before then (at least in some cases)?
  • Is it possible to experience vision that's blurrier than normal, nervousness or loopiness when you first begin this medication? (Began less than a week ago) Does this typically subside? Thank you!
  • Dies methotrexate affect your heart as in palpitations. Skipped beats etc as a side effect ?
  • Doctor, I began taking methotrexate; a rheumathologist prescribed it, of course. He's concerned my polyarthritis which at first, he believed it to be reactive arthritis because of my swollen left foot ankle, is either preliminary stages of psoriatic arthritis or ankylosiing spondylitis. I am scared and I wanted to ask whether it's ok to drink coffee while taking methotrexate. I never go above 400mg of caffeine intake on a day and I do drink more than enough water throughout the day. I will be getting methotrexate inkections for 11 more weeks. He's also instructed me to stay on Medrol 16mg, half of the pill for one more week and a quarter of the pill for another week. I hope my health condition improves. I also hope I am not dependent for the rest of my life on methotrexate. I'd truly appreciate your view. Have a nice day.

My 8 year old son just was put on Methotrexate for CRMO, but he is prescribed an injection once a week....how long should I look for some possible improvement?
  • Does methotrexate go through phase 1 and phase 2 metabolism?

Your like all the other Doctors who think they have all the answers. It takes a lot longer then 2 months .I would like to know how many Doctors have Shares in the Drug companies to help push the price up.

My physician had originally prescribed 15mg tablets, but said that only a portion of the tablets are digested and can cause some side effects as I asked LOTS of questions. I'm not keen on taking this and I hesitated for months, but my increasingly painful joints lead me to finally try it. Reading about the side effects online and seeing that many started with tablets and then eventually switched over to shots because of nausea, etc., I asked if I could just start with the injectable version and use less to start since it's more readily absorbed? She agreed and I've now taken four shots of .3ml (7.5mg). From your video, you indicated that I should start to feel the effects after another month or so. If I feel no change after, say, three months, does that generally mean that: this med doesn't work for me? Or that I'll potentially need to up my dosage? At what point does one determine that methotrexate simply isn't the answer to one's joint issues? Cheers for your info!

What if Methotrexate is used with a secondary medication, in my case Sulfasalazine. I have been on Sulfasalazine for just under 10 years for Anky Spon and just started on Methotrexate10 ml, once a week, dose. I have taken 2 doses so far, and another is due tomorrow. What sort of time frame can I expect before some one in my situation starts to feel the benefits of M kicking in?
  • I am on 7.5 mg methotrexate for the past 1 month for morphia, but I have been experiencing headaches, nausea, and difficulty focusing. These symptoms could be secondary to methotrexate or something else?
