Its cool to see your experiences here since im also in the same area. If i see you i will buy you some food or coffee!
  • I think it's time for you to have a TNG card & cost you around RM10 - 5 years expiry. You can top it up at mostly everywhere - petrol station, 7E or Watson... It's so convenient to have one especially when you need to use a public transportation - local bus, lrt, mrt etc, parking fee, toll fee n more.
  • The patch of land you walked on at 42:37 used to be a beach where the fishermen would set off every morning on their boats. The area behind you used to be Malay kampungs where the fisherfolk lived. As late as the 90s, the area was still a beach teeming with hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs and mudskippers at lowtide. What it is now, and what you are walking on, is recently reclaimed land. The small hotels which used to have a beach and the sea behind them now only have dry land for a view. The reclamation stretches all the way (almost) from Tanjung Tokong to Gurney Drive. You've been there, you know what it looks like.

@44:13 If I am not mistaken, the area that you are walking on is the landfill on the sea. So basically you walked on the sea. 20 years ago when I was a college student in Penang, after watching your video, I was thrilled of how much landfill to the sea and how many new buildings on that area have been built.

and oh, before you head back to KL, go visit Gunung Jerai (Jerai Mount) in Kedah. the view from the mountain facing the sea is beautiful. It's different than Cameron Highland or Genting Highland where it can be too touristy, it's still calm up there.

I think the seasides you're looking for is either Gurney Bay(large park newly opened) or Straits Quey(mall with boats), can't remember any reliable beaches other than Batu Feringghi itself, even Tanjung Bungah (has a beach) is a lil far from where you're at. Lastly if you want to explore the south side of the island, you can go ahead and check out Queensbay Mall and Queens Waterfront(has a sea view). ๐Ÿ˜

You should use Grab? Also, go Red Garden food court evening - would make a great video, Bourdain used to eat there! Its very close to Love lane.
  • There is a running joke about how Malaysians test cars. They give it s few hard knocks - to check saftey, slam the doors a few times - to check built quality, kick the tyres, - you know to check if they are good etc :)

I don't know who recommended Gurney Bay, but Batu Ferringhi (Ferringhi beach) is the best beach in Penang. It is where all the luxury resorts are located. Anything else is just not up to scratch. Take the same bus from Georgetown, will cost RM1.40 or RM2.40 (can't remember). Bring change as those buses never give change. If you want to know Penang bus times, call the Penang bus operator helpline and they will give you times - they used to answer pretty fast and give good info. Some stops have displays indicating when the next bus is. The journey to Batu Ferringhi is about 70 mins from the airport, so perhaps around 45 mins from Georgetown. Georgetown is very old and shabby as they keep it that way to preserve the 'old look' to give tourists that authentic experience. Good luck.

The beach was just a few meters from the mall's entrance but you took the wrong turn.... pls ask the locals cos they're friendly

Ben if you walked the other direction along the waterfront barrier, they have newly opened up a waterfront parkland. It has footpaths and playgrounds. Another thing to note is Airbnb/ Homestay is actually illegal in Penang, but a lot of owners still do it. A lot of owner residences in condoโ€™s do not like short stay visitors, so keep it to yourself. In relation to groceries, if you go down to the basement level of Gurney Plaza or Paragon Plaza there are good grocery stores available. A lot of westerners shop in them, there is a lot of good quality fresh food available, with a lot of western food options. One more place to check out is Straights Key, there is a small mariner and high end houses along the waterfront.
  • Hi Ben, thanks and congrats for the work you do in your vlog. It's interesting ans usefull. I was wonderring if you follow others vlogs about malaysia, and which ones, please ?
  • @michaelc.4613
Ben, there's a waterfront & marine called Straits Quay, don't miss it. I bet you wud love it
  • Ben, I recommend you visit the Queensbay Mall area, south of the island, before the airport. You need to take the bus as its too far to walk. There you can enjoy the waterfront. You can also walk along the beachfront overlooking Jerejak island. Pristine waters. That place is our free trade zone area with many US based microchip production plants operating.
