To find out that Kiera Cass went through a similar Cait Corrain-level controversy over 10 YEARS AGO was definitely a shock…

Although I definitely didn’t do any deep dives or hard investigation into this issue, I can at least say that this book was definitely not worth all that drama. Wendy Darling was just one person among the literal MILLIONS of people that read and reviewed the book. And even though she had her share of criticisms, it’s undeniable that the love for this book and this series is still alive and well even after so many years.

I’m glad I picked this book for Kristen’s Top Picks because even though there were some things I didn’t vibe with, I am eternally grateful that I got to experience the fictitious romance of Maxon and America. Unfortunately, he is my new unattainable standard for men. Sorry.

Be sure to follow Kiera Cass on instagram! @partylikeaworldstar

Despite my criticisms of her actions and don’t get me wrong - she was ABSOLUTELY in the wrong - she did apologize to the original reviewer and Wendy Darling is the only person that can accept or reject her apology. It is not my place to say whether or not people should continue to support Kiera Cass but I like to think that she’s learned (very publicly) from this experience and will not make another mistake like this in the future.

I think the reason she wasn’t punished as severely as Cait Corrain is that she didn’t target people of color, she didn’t falsify any reviews, liking reviews isn’t unethical, and because she is not the one who said the negative stuff. Elena Roth is the one who called the reviewer a bitch and while Kiera should have been smart enough to say “this convo is public and inappropriate,” she just said “mean comments get more likes. whatevs” and “I’ll ask my friends to like the positive reviews.” In terms of authors behaving badly, what Cait Corrain did was disgusting, racist, manipulative, and cruel. What Keira did was just stupid and a little rude.

Omg you've unlocked a core memory for me lmao. I witnessed this whole thing live because I was a follower of Wendy Darling's, and I couldn't believe people just moved on so quickly. The book community really was a different beast back then, if this happened now I doubt people would've just let it go😂
  • Imo, America and Aspen deserved each other. He’s the stereotypical bad boy®️, but she’s also toxic af. She only cares about herself and doesn’t understans the responsabilities of her position, and specially Maxin’s position, particularly in The One. So yeah, Maxin deserved better as well 🫠

It makes me feel so old that I remember Kiera Cass from her Twilight days. She and her friend did these skits where they were the wives of the Volturi and acted like gangster wives and were super famous in the Twilight fandom. I followed her side channel because it was about her trying to get published and I even bought her first book, the Siren that she self published. Always wondered if her popularity and fans were the reason she got trad published as she’d been trying for years before and didn’t get anywhere until the channel became popular
  • I'm not even that interested in booktube or booktok, but I'm aware of the Cait Corrain controversy and I saw this on my recommended page and your energy instantly endeared me! Then when I clicked on your channel, I saw your intro video with your huge stack of books and I saw Wotakoi and I instantly subbed 😂 I'm not super plugged in to new releases in English fiction but I'm in a big shojosei manga phase rn so I had to sub lmao. Thank you for your engaging commentary and also for highlighting Doctors Without Borders! Your positive energy was made for YouTube! I think I'm gonna check out your Aristotle and Dante vid next 💕

The 2010s internet being called ‘new’ was a true lol moment for me
  • You being hyped that one of your vids got 180 views and now this one currently having 7.4k view. You must be thrilled, so happy for you! Good video!
  • I love how happy you are in this video from 4 days ago about hitting 30 - and seeing that you're now at 300!
  • @krystinay
Oh yay! You were on my home page. Hopefully you get more subscribera, I liked this video!
  • Was not even aware of the controversy until this video. Wow. 10 years later and we see a repeat.......fingers crossed we don't see another repeat any time soon. I'm going to have read the books again cause for some reason I remember Aspen being likable. At least until the 2nd and 3rd book, but still. I remember absolutely loving this series as kid. So much so that I got the whole series plus the 2 books after that follow America's daughter..............be careful if you read that by the way. The second book had a scene that made me question things about the main series.💀 Thank you for the review!❤

I just want to say — you have an incredible stage presence for videos! Realizing you had so few when you mentioned it was baffling, I truly expected you to have many more with the way you carry yourself. Glad to see it's gone up tremendously since you've posted this. :))

If stickers and posters are involved i feel like you kinda have to get the book, its like a reward
  • @lalalola.
thank u for sharing this! i never knew this happened but it definitely made me lose the love i had for this series. the series is not that good but it’s such a core part of so many peoples middle school experience that i feel like people can’t help but love it
  • @wolf-gh2dz
new to your channel, glad it was recommend to me lmao! i remember reading the selection in middle school because everyone i knew was obsessed with it, lowkey laboring through it, and then attempting to read the sequel before quitting two chapters in.
  • Petunia the Orchid reminds me of Flounder, Ariel's bestie in The Little Mermaid is a name not his species...😂
  • @croquettie
omg its been so long since ive ever heard about the selection since ive read it back in 6th grade. great analysis, girl!!
  • @POSSIBLYDYL
The only time off the top of my head I didn’t like Maxon was with Celeste. When he was immediately kissing her in the first book and when she was threatening America and ruining her dress Maxon yelled at America and called her jealous or something?? It’s been a while but something like that
  • @applekkat
