What is the best soldering iron to buy? Should you spend a lot of money or will a cheap one do the job. If you are mainly repairing audio plugs and leads this video will help you make the decision. More product links below- Hakko: geni.us/Hakko_FX888D

One manufacturer gave these suggestions. A 15 watt iron will suit circuit board, micro components and thin wires. A 25 watt iron is good for general audio parts and cables. A 40 watt iron is suited to more automotive size cables and parts.

To keep it simple a 25 or 40 watt soldering iron is more than adequate for most basic audio lead repairs. You can use higher wattage irons as long as the tip of the iron is not too large. These large irons don’t have a place in an audio tech’s tool box.

Great video! I purchased the Hakko 936 soldering station(around $85.00 in the States) and it proved to be an excellent investment; consequently, in the first six months after purchasing it, I have already gotten the full return on the investment. The fact that most of us who do any type of soldering are most likely extremely detail oriented and keep a very organized work space, the soldering station laced in perfectly to my work area. Great advice in the video and thanks again!

Try reflowing nickel sized solder pads on a 1965 Fender Super Reverb amp with a 25w or 40w iron, that giant old iron works perfectly to heat up them big old solder pads in seconds..
  • My JBC CD2-BB is my workhorse. Costs a pretty penny but will last forever and works amazingly well!

add a dimmer switch inline with soldering iron to adjust temp

I used to have a cheap radio shack one and was having a hard time soldering and then I moved to a metcal 5000 station and I can assure you the difference is really made me really happy there is no comparison between them.
  • I thought that was very illustrative, thanks mate. I've just got myself an 80w Ironside iron and I'm gagging to try it out.
  • For soldering plugs I use an Elvo temperature controlled soldering iron set at 320c, I have unregulated irons but the temperature can get too hot and damage the work/melt the plugs. If the solder flux goes up in a puff of white smoke when the iron is applied the temperature is far too high. The Weller Magnastat irons are quite good, fixed-temperature bits and fast temperature recovery.
  • That's the best video I've seen on soldering irons! Huge help. Thanks! What's that MASSIVE iron for?

Hi Gary, you've got a new subscription in you Channel. Thanks for you videos. I'm from Brazil and a sound enthusiast. I prepare and control the sound of a house of worship.
  • I have an old Weller Si15c (15w) and a 25w variant with flat tips. What sort of tip do you recommend for stuff like soldering headerpins? As sharp as possible, or somewhere in between?
  • LOL 1:13 no they are only for dentists! :-) First I was about to tell you that you probably was not totally correct in many things you say. But then I thought about who you target group are and decided to tell you that you video, are one of the better on the internet, thanks for sharing! :-)

What are your thoughts on the Dremel Versatip? Thanks for your time. Need a good portable unit.
  • My butane solder iron replacement tips cost almost as much as the iron - so something to watch out for! It's a little like replacement ink costing almost as much as the printer. However, it has been a great little iron and has a blow torch attachment which is useful for really heavy wires.
