The Shocking Reason Simon And Garfunkel Broke Up

Simon and Garfunkel made great music and sold millions of records together, but it wasn’t only their music that made history. It was their friendship and all the feuding between them that got everyone interested. But what really happened that made them go from best friends to rivals? The truth is finally coming to light.

It all started when Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were 11 and met at Parsons High School in Queens. It didn’t take long for them to become best friends and they did what all friends do, spend time together, share their first cigarettes together and listen to a lot of music. All that shared love for music and singing was the start of a long journey between them.

I don't understand those who denigrate Garfunkle because he "only sang" while Simon did that as well as wrote the songs and accompanied the duo on guitar. How many songs did Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole, Tony Bennett, and Elvis write? Great artists all, and who but a few fans can name their song writers, arrangers, and back-up musicians? Art Garfunkel's gifted singing gave the team its angelic sound and he should be given all due credit for his contribution.
  • Paul = brilliant songwriter. Art = brilliant vocalist. Put them together - pure dynamite! As solo artists - still explosive!
  • Simon was absolutely a musical genius, but Garfunkel has a voice that is legendary, which us rare. So each one needed the other and I think they were, of course, incredible together.

The irony is that no one thinks of Paul as short. They think of him as one of the few best singer songwriters in history. He's a big man on music street.

How many people have known each other since they were 11 years old? Their singing together wasn't just good harmony...it was the sound of the bond of their friendship. Their collaboration was unique because of that bond. That magic came from their hearts, as well as their respective talents. We all enjoyed it, and we all lost it when they parted ways. I pray they will go to their graves as friends, no matter what.

This is wrong. Paul did not "leave Art behind." Art wanted to be a movie star, and he wanted Paul to just sit in NY and write songs while he winged in from wherever to contribute vocals. Paul's frustration at this proposed setup is completely understandable. Paul also wrote a beautiful song for Art called "The Only Living Boy in New York," wherein he encourages Art to pursue his dream of acting ("Tom, get your plane right on time) and assures him he will be good at it.

I’ve heard plenty of interviews with both of them. It’s obvious they have tremendous love and respect for each other. Relationships are filled with varying hills and valleys. These guys are both passionate as all hell. Their hills and valleys are going to be on the extreme side.

Garfunkel should have been like "Whatever you say, Mr. Simon."

Paul Simon is a class leading lyricist. One of the top ten ever.

The only real problem with Artie was that his singing partner became one of the greatest songwriters of the past 60 years.
  • Absolutely no need to feel sad about the breakup. All things come to an end , so let's be positive and feel blessed by all the great songs they have bestowed on us. And not forget how difficult it must have been for them .❤

Garfunkel has an amazing voice and that alone is a mighty instrument. He is very gifted. You cannot put him down for just being a singer. Together this pair were amazing.

I loved Paul Simon's quote at the Concert in the Park about enjoying a show with a few hundred thousand of his closest friends.

People do forget, or don't know that, though Simon wrote the songs, Garfunkel help arrange many. For example, the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" had ideas and contributions from Garfunkel that made it even better like the heightened ending. In the end, they were great when the chemistry was working. Definitely one of the greatest duo vocalists ever. They both deserve credit and respect.
