Bro, imagine having the sense to give up the throne but having the charisma to having it handed right back. The nobility really placed a lot of faith in Baldwin

It’s amazing that the council didn’t want him to retire. That says so much about him & them! Usually, there is a lot of intrigue & backstabbing in bids to get ahold of power & the throne.

As someone with an often painful chronic illness, this man has been one of my lifelong inspirations.
  • Being King of Jerusalem sounds pretty badass until you realize the great amount of kings of that nation (like Herod the Great and Herod Agrippa) that perished due to a painful and horrible disease

This guys ruled thousands of people, defeat most formidable enemy commander at that time, managed to keep peace between 2 warring parties and he was only 23 years old until his death. Meanwhile i am 24 years old and still achieved nothing

I remember seeing him in "Kingdom of Heaven", at a very young age, and getting creeped out. Several years later, he became the main inspiration for an important character in my future novel (which is half historical, half fantasy). Thank you for more information about him.
  • Some men find motivation in men like tate or modern celebrities but not me. A year ago i when i was 17 i learned about the Achievements of Baldwin the IV and said to myself this great men when he was the same age as me achieved so much while i was wasting my time doing nothing with myself. Then i realised if this men went to battle with leprosy and commanded so much respect i have no excuses why i can't get up early and go work out and improme myself everyday. Truly an inspiration.

"I felt that I could live to be 100 that day now I know I will not live to see 30". Those words are still haunting to me
  • @theiviachine
Crazy how he was such a amazing king and only lived to 23. Most people today life don’t even start until then.
  • I can’t believe I’ve never heard of him. This man was a legend!

I think he is the most intetesting character in the movie (Edward Norton did a great job). I have the director's cut of the movie, great direction by Ridley Scott.
  • 2:14 "In 1174, Baldwin's father unexpectedly died of dysentery" Contracted, no doubt, during the lesser known "Oregon Crusade"
  • Leprosy is such a fascinating historical disease. Mycobacterium leprae is so slow-growing, manifesting the characteristic skin lesions can take so long (most mycobacterium skin infections carry uniquely painless ulcers). To have carried the stigma of disease with dignity and faith, inspiring warriors who would likely be disgusted by you, all while having to be a king and military strategist, is a remarkable testament to Baldwin IV's sheer force of will and devotion to Christ. Glad to see people taking an interest in this amazing figure from history again.

Baldwin: led an army and defended his kingdom @ age 16. Me at 16: playing minecraft at home
  • I always liked him in "Kingdom of Heaven". Always had the impression of constant overcoming of his condition and constant pain he lived in, and yet finding strength to endure. Amazing!

Everyone saying the nobility showed their loyalty to Baldwin by refusing to let him abdicate should consider how advantageous it was for the nobility to 1. Have a crippled and bedridden liege and 2. Kick his inevitable succession crisis down the road for however long they could

The video is mostly right, but this at 0:35 is a HUGE mistake. Baldwin IV was, indeed, the second and youngest son of King Amalric, but he was not, by any possible means, the younger brother of Baldwin III, since Baldwin III was actually Amalric's older brother (in shorter words, Baldwin III was the paternal uncle of Baldwin IV). Baldwin's older sister was Sibylla, future Queen of Jerusalem after her brother's untimely death in 1185, and her own son's (Baldwin V) in 1186.

That guy was simply amazing! Despite having such terrible disease and having responsibility to protect such fragile state, dude managed to be very succesfull.

I'm not sure if the Mask in kingdom of heaven was historically accurate, but it is by far the most Beautiful mask I have ever seen
