Character Select Screens offer us a look at how purpose can flirt with style to produce a necessary user interface that ultimately is used to hover past anime sword fighters! Today, Alax utilizes one of his eight abilities, overthinking, to create the Axis of Funk: A diagram so unnecessarily robust that he almost should have done a tier list. What character selects will be unselected? What screens will make you scream? Why is most of it Mario games?

The Rivals of Aether character select is another one that's great, having the character's portraits grouped by their elemental alignment, as well as having the mod support be built in to the menu itself. Not to mention they allow you to playtest your character ON the select screen itself. Absolutely goated, hope they keep that perfection up in the sequel.

UMVC3 has a phenomenal select screen with the comic book aesthetic, would love to see a part 2 to this video

Jet Set Radio had a really cool character selection "menu". It's every character doing their thing in their garage/secret base/turf and it really shows their personality. It's kinda unorganized, but it goes well with the messy and chaotic nature of the game! They even do a little dance after you select your character, I love it :)

I always liked how the characters were running or walking in the Sonic Adventure character select, they all looked so determined, and I liked how it was laid out in a circle. I think I kind of just like Sonic Adventure's menus, with the sky and the patterns and the fonts and the clean shapes.

Diddy Kong Racing always will be to me the best character select screen, love how the instruments changes for every character without restarting the song

The character select screen for Capcom vs. SNK’s arcade mode is fantastic. Groove selection changes character portraits to match the art style of the chosen groove (Capcom or SNK).

In Ultimate Chicken Horse, the character select screen is also the stage select screen and you play on it like if you’re already in the game. Perfection.

glad to see that the characters like ganondorf and cat are coming back

Need some love for TF2! Being able to see your customized loadout, everyone with their own little animation, and of course that musical stinger when you hover over all the characters. It's just so good!

A Temu ad?! This video was definitely in long development so I can probably excuse how off the pulse this is.

Melty Blood, anyone? Under Night in-Birth is basically the successor to its screens. Special shoutouts to Actress Again Current Code, that one is CLEAN with the counterparts of each character mirrored on each side.

I think one of the most creative fighting game select screens has to be Capcom vs SNK 1 and that's not because the select screen itself but more so for the transitions in and out of it. I just love how we are going through a network of endless fights and picking a character is almost like turning the channel to the fighter you want to watch. Everything about it feels so exciting! It like the whole world is tuning in which might be the point as Capcom crossing over with SNK was such a massive deal that blew peoples minds. Making character select screens must be beyond fun.

One of my other favorite character select screens are from Pokken Tournament, Sonic Riders Zero Gravity, and the original Hyrule Warriors. -Pokken's character select screen can sort of line up with how Smash is with character posing and playstyle and the sound effect of hovering over each Pokemon just feels powerful which makes sense as it was inspired from Tekken -Zero Gravity's while it uses PNGs it also shows character emotions and personality -and Hyrule Warriors is just really nice to look at with the rotated diamond portraits and different weapons

UMVC3's character select screen is one of my favorites: 1- It's very organised with capcom in the left and Marvel on the rigth and and in the capcom side the carachters from the same series are in the same colum 2- the idea of being a comic book is amazing

Nonono the melee character select is so real for putting the clones further back on the z axis. Melee is so real for that. It's so real

I really love all Soul Calibur menus, but specially SC6. The music is amazing and the transition between character art and model when you select them is so satisfactory. Also, "welcome to the hall of History retold" never gets old

Mario Hoops 3on3 lives rent free in my head for the creativity, style, and music when it comes to it's character select.
  • Honestly, i would love this to become a semi-regular series. Where perhaps Alex goes over in depth character select screens of a single game franchise. Say like Mario 😉
