When Philip, father of Alexander the Great threatened to invade Sparta, he sent them a letter saying: "You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city." Spartans answered that letter with a simple word: "If..." Philip never attacked them.
