My favourite story about the Spartans is from the Olympic games. Each Greek city would have a space reserved for its spectators and the custom you would give up your seat to someone older than you. An event at the Olympic Games some years after the Persian invasion shows quite clearly an attitude among other Greeks to the Spartans. An old man was trying to find a place to sit down, limping and stumbling as he did so. He walked haltingly along the front of the grassy banks where the spectators sat, looking for a spare patch of ground, but there was none and nobody was prepared to give up his seat. Then the old man reached the section reserved for Spartiates. At once, every single man stood up to offer the old man his place, some older than the old man. The rest of the audience broke out into applause for the Spartiate’s behaviour. The old man looked around and called out. “I see what this means. All Greeks know what is right – but only the Spartiates do it.”

The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in a fight.

The game of pushing people off an island was one of my favorite games when I was in elementary school. When it snowed and the plows would make small mountains of snow. We would push everyone else off the hill till you were the last one. Then see how long you could hold it. King of the Hill. Loved doing that.

Despite having a world class military. Their rigid dedication to doctrine and inability to be flexible and adapt was one of the reasons for why Sparta could never hold the upper for too long, and was the reason their society went into terminal decline in the forth century BC. Even when leaders like Lysander achieved success using unconventional tactics, they were viewed with suspicion. It was always a matter of time, whenever it was Athens, Thebes or a combination of several city-states, that Sparta Army, no matter how formidable would meet its match.

3:58 Many parents are going to hate this, and i understand why, but like it or not, they were practical about it. Babies with disabilities were a huge liability back then. - A Man with disabilities can’t fight and win - A woman with disabilities certainly will have difficulties on child bearing.

"One-against-one, they are as good as anyone in the world. But when they fight in a body, they are the best of all. For though they are free men, they are not entirely free. They accept Law as their master. And they respect this master more than your subjects respect you. Whatever he commands, they do. And his command never changes: It forbids them to flee in battle, whatever the number of their foes. He requires them to stand firm, to conquer or die" - Former King Demaratus of Sparta to Xerxes

Sparta was so good at war that they didn’t need art, monuments, ect. Yet they remained throughout history as one of the toughest in the world.

The Spartan winter was not colder than today. Infact there was a warm period historically that was so warm people grew wine grapes in Scotland. The winter would still have been tough especially in the mountains of Greece, but it would not have been tougher than today.
