“So efficient and hushed are our brains in their day to day operations, we are apt to miss what an extraordinary and complicated achievement it is to feel mentally well. A mind in a healthy state is, in the background, continually performing a near-miraculous set of manoeuvres that underpin our moods of clear-sightedness and purpose. To appreciate what mental health might be (and therefore what its opposite involves), we might take a moment to consider some of what will be going on in the folds of an optimally-functioning mind...”

As a medic, I’m so glad more people are becoming aware of this aspect of their overall health.

This school is really good for my mental health.
  • IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT. YOUR NOT SICK. YOUR NOT BAD. YOUR NOT WRONG. Society, parents, peers always trying to make you feel bad for not fitting in. YOU ARE NO SHEEP. BE PROUD OF YOUR PAIN. You are gifted. You are an artist of emotion no one will ever understand.
  • A much needed definition of "healthy mind". Yet again, Thank you School Of Life
  • Recognizing your own self-worth exists outside of the opinions of others and striving only to compete with who you were yesterday, answering only to your own inner compass, and looking at every imperfect venture as a 'process of elimination' rather than a 'failure to acquire value'
  • I think something that really affects people's mental health nowadays is hustle culture and toxic productivity. It's important to not be lazy and accomplish your goals but this idea of going on 4 hours of sleep and working every living moment is not good for your physical or mental health.
  • This video reminded me of how far I have come. I am still not where I want to be, but I am leagues away from where I was three years ago.
  • Real help is soon damn expensive. How does anyone get help when they can barely pay the rent?

  • What is Mental Health? A thing I wish I and I think others couldve learned about and understood much earlier in life instead of later. But then again that’s in the past and it’s important to focus on the now and whateve current mental health issues many are facing. Another jaded definition of Mental Health for me is that thing that’s negatively associated with bad stuff because many underestimate just how important it really is and see mental health issues either as something unimportant or nonsense.

Life can be a struggle at times even for those who don’t suffer from debilitating mental illness. For me, the biggest take-away from this piece is that mental health must not be stigmatized and we should all have the same sympathy for the mentally ill as we do for those that suffer physical ailments. But, beyond sympathy and general supportiveness what more can we do to help and how to know if/when tough love would be more beneficial than tea and sympathy? In my experience, depressed people often have self-destructive habits that are easy for others to see but hard to talk about with the affilicted.
