with respect to our leader WD Mohammed.....we make it too complicated and confusing. There is a noun (essence) and a modifier (species). A pretty man. No one debates if it should be man pretty. So what is the essence and what is the modifier? I am a Muslim who happens to be an American ensha Allah.

Emam I love you and your teachings and I am forever grateful to the community of Warith Deen Mohammed for being there to bring me into Islam. Fifty years ago, maybe, young people took care of old people. American identity? America is good in many ways. The biggest way I see now is we have systems to take care of the old. Many old people are mistreated and have no system to protect them. In Africa, they claim it is a place for the young, because the old die so quickly. Pensions and medical care from the government make America better than the rest of the world. Sadly too many young people and I even believe it happened in the old days...misteat old people. Sorry long winded old guy. American and Muslim are identities we choose. Saying Muslim American in no way prevents any Muslim from shucking Islam for a few dollars or fame. Whatever way we say it, the 2nd term is your essence, the 1st, a modifier.
