Percussion: we’re not going too fast, everyone is going too slow
  • My band teacher had a rule, where whenever you play a percussion instrumen, and you aren't a percussionist, then you either have to do 25 pushups or you get written up. That just led to everybody playing their instruments at the start of class, which led to about 96 decibals for about 5 minutes a day and permanent hearing damage. Somebody also decided to run his hand across the wind chimes one time and got the option of either 720 pushups, or he could get written up. He decided to get written up.

I remember middle school band. In 6th grade, they kept us separated by woodwinds and brass and taught us how to play our instruments first. Then, as we got into actual sheet music, they finally put us together in full band and we got to play all together for the first time. I still remember how glorious (and horrible) it was. As soon as we stopped, everybody started talking to each other about how amazing it felt to be part of that. I miss those days. I wanna be back in high school band so bad man I peaked in high school and my life since has been a slow downfall. It's only been a year since I graduated wtf 😭 I wanna go back to the first time we went to a marching band competition and took home the grand prize. Like that's one hell of an achievement for a "freshman" who hadn't started school yet.

Today I had the interesting experience of playing with the percussionist that was playing with our orchestra for Assessments. (I don’t play percussion, I’m a first violin but I broke my arm yesterday and couldn’t bow so our director just decided I’d figure out how to play tambourine in 45 mins so that I could play the concert.) And here are just a couple things he said: “Wait… WHY DO YOU GUYS HAVE SO MANY NOTES??” “So, are violas just violins that want to be special?” “FOR THE LAST TIME… STOP TOUCHING THE SNARE DRUM.” “So, do like all orchestra directors hate percussionists or just this one?” “I’m confused, you only have 4 strings, how do you make so many different noises?” “Why are the violins such show offs?” “Dude, what’s that big one. Is it on steroids?” (Talking about a double bass 😭) And many more…
