Exploring Key West ENTIRE Perimeter

Tons of old memories here! I spent 10 1/2 months stationed in Key West from Nov 1972 to Sept 1973. I had bicycle for 10 months and I rode almost the same route you took LOTS of times. I think I pedaled almost every street at one time or another. Key West is a fun place to visit but I got bored after about 4 months but am grateful to have visited. I got to go back again in 1989 and 1991 and had my wife this time and the Naval station, Fleet Sonar School (FSS) and Coast Guard station as I knew them were gone. It took me almost a day to find the old main gate to Key West NOB. One nice thing about going to FSS was the beach was the best in Key West and we had it all to ourselves, NO tourists! The snorkeling was good there. The basin where CGC Ingham is moored is where the diesel boats (submarines) moored. Mallory square got a huge makeover, went touristy and lost it's rustic charm. It's much larger now too. There has been quite a struggle to accommodate the cruise ships and not loose the waterfront for the crowds to watch sunsets, I guess they still have the street performers. 17:00 A and B lobster house is still there! I was only a seaman apprentice and was paid about $302/ month and I couldn't afford high priced places like the lobster house. In 1973 there was a big discussion amongst the conchs about high rise hotels and apartments. It looks like the high rises won out. Tons of outside money poured in, property taxes skyrocketed and this drove out a lot of locals who couldn't afford to live there anymore. 28:37 to Smathers beach is my favorite part riding the perimeter of the island, it was almost all separated from cars. Most if not all tourists don't realize that the actual southern most point is over by FSS called Whitehead spit, check it out. I hope you enjoyed your trip. Thanks for refreshing my memories!

Love watching the video we go every year just watching it now in March 2024. We stay about 3 months on a military base sigsbee ,but the weather wasn't the best 2024 winter was chilly we left little early march 12th then drove to Tampa for week came come. wishing we were back we ride every where on our bikes. Best place on earth. If you want to live quietly, you can live quietly. If you want to party you can party your butt off. Everything is walking distance... Climate is perfect. People are fun and kind... It's a paradise on Earth! ❤
