“Five to one” was the approximate ratio of whites to blacks, young to old, non-pot smokers to pot smokers in the US in 1967. It was also the amount of Vietnamese to American soldiers in Vietnam. Jim Morrison was so drunk when he recorded “Five to One” (1968), he needed help on when to begin singing. If you listen closely, you can hear someone from the studio staff hushing “One more time” before the lead vocalist started the first verse. On bootlegs of live recordings, Morrison included the phrase “f—ked up” in the spoken word section at the end. He swore a lot at live concerts, but the studio LPs were always curse-free. The part of the tune about “Shadows of the evening” is an adaptation of the Victorian-era hymn “Shadows of the Evening,” whose first verse reads : “Now the day is over Night is drawing nigh Shadows of the evening Steal across the sky” The line “No one here gets out alive” was used for a Jim Morrison biography (1980) by authors Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugarman. Robby Krieger taped a version of “Five To One” with Marilyn Manson for the 2000 Doors tribute album “Stoned Immaculate.” 💜🚪💙 You have not been forgotten, forever young James Douglas Morrison (1943 - 1971)… 🌹

Love my girl She lookin' good, come on, one more Five to one, baby One in five No one here gets out alive, now You get yours, baby I'll get mine Gonna make it, baby If we try The old get old And the young get stronger May take a week And it may take longer They got the guns Well, but we got the numbers Gonna win, yeah We're takin' over Come on! Your ballroom days are over, baby Night is drawing near Shadows of the evening Crawl across the years Yeah, walk across the floor with a Flower in your hand Trying to tell me no one understands Trade in your hours for a handful of dimes Gonna' make it, baby, in our prime Come together one more time Get together one more time Get together one more time Get together one more time Get together one more time Get together one more time Get together one more time Get together one more time Get together, gotta, get together (Get together one more time) (Get together one more time) Hey, come on, honey You go on along home and wait for me, baby I'll be there in just a little while You see, I gotta go out in this car With these people and (Get together one more time) Get together one more time Get together one more time Get together, got to Get together, got to Get together, got to Take you up into my room and (Get together one more time) Love my girl She lookin' good, lookin' real good Love ya, come on ladys and gentlemen, once again the doors!!!
