Actually based on real events. When the Interplanetary Miners Union was first formed and attempted a strike, Deep Rock Galactic tried replacing all employees with mining mules. They had a 2% survival rate and only completed the mission 40% of the time, so Deep Rock Galactic gave into the mining union's demands (no extorting beer prices) and re-hired its employees.

What I appreciate about these old gameplay videos showing the old space rig is it feels like the rig has been slowly upgraded by the dwarves instead of the studio. They started with the bare minimum, beer and a drop pod, and worked their way outward as they saw more and more success with their mining operations.
