Disney has had a lot of financial success in recent years by remaking their popular animated movies into live-action versions (or super realistic animated versions.) With billions of dollars made so far, it’s only natural that they’ve decided to keep moving through their catalog. And so… live-action Mulan is here!

The remake lots of questions. Like why has all the fun been removed from this thing? Why is Mushu gone, only to be replaced with a whole bunch of other magical stuff? Why is this a superhero movie now? Why was Mulan born with superhuman abilities? What’s up with the witch character telling her where to go all the time? Why aren’t any of her army friends fun anymore? Did she just kick an arrow into that dude’s chest?!?

To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Disney’s live-action Mulan! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvnience.

Her character arc wasn't an arc. It wasn't even a straight line. It was just a dot. She stayed exactly the same from start to finish.
  • "She's not gonna grow into a warrior through cunning and hard work and perseverance?" "No, sir. She's just the Chosen One." "And what message do you think that's gonna be sending to kids?" "That they should've been the Chosen One."

It's weirdly impressive how this movie managed to anger EVERY side of the culture war at once.

“She should wear armor.” She’s already wearing the plot armor.

I love how her long hair shows she’s a woman even though in Confucian China men and women had long hair. They did literally no research for this movie lol

    Mulan's expressions: Happy 😐 Sad 😐 Angry 😐 Concerned 😐 Scared 😐

90s Mulan: untrained, but determined to show her worth. 2020 Mulan: The one.

He watched it so we didn't have to. He's the hero we need.

This pitch meeting actually made the movie sound better than it really is.

“Compares her to a dog” Fun fact: dogs actually hold sacred meaning to Mongolians

"Spoilers Ahead" Me: Yeah, I dont plan on watching the movie. Spoil away.
  • @KingDugan
I feel that there is a misconception among movie makers lately, where strong compelling characters can't have flaws or fail at anything.
  • @NickCorvello
"she's Anakin, she's Rey, she's Neo, she's Maybelline" "Oh, being born with it is TIGHT" 😆 One of the best setups to a "(blank) is tight" moment ever
  • @dinocha0s
"Why doesnt he just shoot her again?" "Because theres an emotional scene going on" what a silly question everybody knows bad guys will wait patiently for you to have an emotional scene even in a fight
  • I can hear Mushu ranting on this movie. “Dishonor on you! Dishonor on your cow.”
  • 90's film: "Mom, can I be strong like Mulan?" "Yes, honey, if you work hard and use your head." 2020 film: "Mom, can I be strong like Mulan?" "Yes, honey, if you activate your superpowers and brute force your way through every problem... Oh, you don't have those? Then no."
  • Mulan has got to be my favorite Disney movie. Because it was heavily based on the original folk lore of Milan but also had its own creativity like adding Mushu and the Cricket, and giving all these characters pleasant personalities that made it more enjoyable to watch. Milan didn’t have powers, she wasn’t a Mary Sue. She was a normal girl who only wanted to help her father because if he had gone, he could be killed. And she knew she was going to be killed if she got caught yet she did it anyways which is what shows her incredible mindset. And as she grew as a character, so did the other characters. They all messed up, had a hard time with training, and struggled to get through with things but over time they ALL became physically strong, smarter, and better fit for the reason they were all there, to fight in a war. It wasn’t Milan holding up the whole team. And the love story was so subtle yet precious I adored it. It was a good movie that showed healthy feminism and girl power without just shoving it down your throat. And then they remade it and now the children of the future will likely only watch the remake because ooo magic.

Ryan missed the part where instead of china bowing to her, she becomes the emperor's bodyguard...
