The Fiery CA Glue and Water Controversy...Tested // B4WMT #6

Does CA glue need anything other than water to harden? If this is true, then why do companies sell accelerator and activator? Is there a scam afoot? In this video, we'll test to see what type of role water plays with cyanoacrylate as well as if accelerators and activators are worth their salt.

FYI: Thick CA sets slower than thin CA. I find it great for joining different materials together. ie: wood to plastic, metal to plastic. Yes, I admit I'm a modeler. But I agree with you how to use CA, as a clamp on larger projects. With wood joining, you can't beat wood or hide glues.

Try baking soda dissolved in water...👍

the bonding after a sprits of water may look like it works, but...the joint is weaker than just using superglue. just using superglue may take longer to set yes, but with a water spray, it may join quickly but it will have a weaker join. mix isopropyl with bicarb and you will have a quick stronger bond

Working in a furniture manufacture co., I have noticed that using drops and/or 's' pattern and sliding smaller pieces against the other surface to help spread the pva [wood] glue, the pva sets and 'grabs', reducing the need to clamp. Sliding too much results in loosening again.

Must say you’re truly thorough buddy, I’m going to take your loctite recommendation for my future projects 👍👍👍

Fantastic video, Rob! Thanks a bunch for the testing! 😃 Curiously enough, I once used alcohol as an activator. Ok, it wasn't pure alcohol, it was a deodorant... But it worked! 😬 Another experiment you can make is to add some kind of powder to the CA glue. I started using baking soda, but they say PVC dust (from sanding it) is even better. I use it a lot when I need to add some structure to what I'm gluing, you know? Because it becomes like a concrete, really. I use it a lot with rc cars and stuff like that - and many times I don't even add epoxy over it afterwards (unless it's a moving part or pressing point). Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊 Merry Christmas and happy new year!

While water does help to start the set, there is no comparison to using activator. In fact, I won't use CA glue without it.
  • Interesting finds. I did notice using a lot of CA glue over the summer there was a couple times I almost needed to evacuate my shop due to the fumes. Looking back, I wonder how much of it was the glue curing as opposed to the aerosol activator.

Thank you! Really appreciate the common sense approach you have to everything. Great job on the testing. And for those who don't appreciate it, just remember, opinions are like butts, everybody has one. Happy Holidays!

Excellent review and liked the two camera visual observations. You can't go anywhere in life without running into "Experts" who purchased their PhD's at a 7-11. Unfortunately they are the first to criticize without the ability to spell much less know what a control is when testing. Keep up the great videos and have a Merry Christmas! 👍🏻
  • Nice video Rob! Thanks for sharing it with us! and Merry Christmas! ✝🎁🎄And Happy New Year!😎JP

Water is necessary for CA glues to polymerize/cure. However, CA glue in the bottle uses acid to prevent the glue in the bottle from curing. Something basic would be necessary to really accelerate the curing. Water may help some, but w/o a base, it won‘t be as fast. Something basic might work - but not sure if there is other more potent stuff in the accelerators. While CA glue is more or less all the same (other than varying viscosities etc.), accelerators from different manufacturers vary quite a bit in composition.
  • You didn't test the thing I told you that makes activator better/useful. You can spray activator on a workpiece well in advance of when you glue it. It remains "activated" even after it is dry. If you spray water on it will only work if the workpiece is still wet.

I have a bottle of Loctite 495 I keep in the fridge, it has been in there for several years now and it's still good to use.
  • @josecanyousee56
I have heard that an open CA will deteriorate faster in high humidity. So living in the south I put mine in a container. Seems to do the trick.
  • @gigaphonicon
I've never bought activator or accelerator or kicker. I have used baking soda with super glue it works pretty good. Best place to buy super glue is still the dollar tree for me as little as I use it and its shelf life.
  • Had a shop teacher tell me back in the 70’s “activator/accelerant is just fancy water, waters free (in the 70’s? Damn near) just use water, but retardant can be many things, none are water, don’t use water for that”
  • Good information Buddy. I really don't like when the maker community pushes one product over another more affordable alternative, like "scarbond". I like Elmer's Glue products, my dad and grandfather swore by them. I'm just tired giving my money to the Big New Expensive Glue conglomerate. Just because you have better ad campaign doesn't mean yours is the best product.
