"Luffy reminds me a lot of me, when I was a little kid." When Iñaki Godoy received the news he got the role of Luffy, he knew it would change his life forever. From having his own 'One Piece' journal where he kept notes on every episode to putting on the straw hat for the first time, Iñaki Godoy truly manifested his pirate dreams. Iñaki breaks down his entire process for the 'One Piece' live-action, from studying original voice actor Mayumi Tanaka's legendary dubbing, meeting the manga creator Eiichiro Oda for the first time, seeing the incredible special effects come to life, and so much more.

SAG-AFTRA members are currently on strike; as part of the strike, union actors are not promoting their film and TV projects. This video was conducted prior to the strike.

He made Oda himself laugh with his audition for Luffy. I could think of no greater honor. We found our Joy Boy
  • @Lidoe
The fact that he can embody and capture the essence of the character without even originally being a fan of the source material is a talent in itself.
  • @drechaf9761
This kid is infectious just by being himself. Doesn't matter if he's Luffy, the guy is magnetic. Don't really see actors like this. Fresh air. All the best to him.
  • @AlexReynard
I am 100% sold on his casting. I didn't even notice the hand on the shoulder when Luffy punches. Iñaki doesn't just get the soul of the character, he's observant in building the character. Mad respect.
  • I never noticed it until he pointed it out. Luffy is indeed a listener. I got deceived by how loud and frank he is. But I realized that whenever someone is talking, especially with sincerity, he just listens and immediately understands them. Luffy isn't as stupid as I thought he was. He's childish but with a very high emotional intelligence.
  • @montogomery478
Dude. He continues to prove he is perfect for playing Luffy!
  • @TheBruise25
He's very likable. It's so refreshing to see an actor actually STUDY, and LOVE a character that he is playing!! I've never heard of One Piece, but I'll be watching it.
  • @AQBPlays
This might be the single greatest casting for a live action adaptation ever.
  • We as a fandom REALLY lucked out when they found Iñaki. You can feel they way he reflects his genuine self just like Luffy does.
  • @SoulKingBrook.
I love how he just views being cast as something fun and how he tries to bring fun to the set. I’d be so stressed worrying I’d mess up.
  • @shanendotmov
I would listen to Iñaki all day, he's so real, honest, and natural in interviews that it makes me trust him so much!
  • @rupokki
He studied and understands Luffy so well! What a professional! Luffy is part of many people's childhood, thank you for portraying him so well and keeping his spirit in the live action.
  • @srinidhirao
Actually i love that he points out that Luffy listens a lot and doesn't speak too much, even if he says hilarious stuff bluntly. I just started watching One Piece the anime and i'm really noticing how many times they cut to Luffy and he's just straight-faced, not saying a word. That makes me laugh so hard
  • @westnile21
The moment he said he arrived on set blasting John Cenas theme song he sold me on everything. Dude is the perfect casting for Luffy.
  • This kid has a deep understanding for screenwriting and storytelling, which is honestly not as common in actors as you'd think. He is going to go places in the Entertainment industry.
  • @Elmerphant
Inaki is the most likable kid in the world. He comes off with so much heart and light. Obviously he's human and probably has bad days but he just seems like the most genuine person full of joy. Perfect casting!
  • @TyRendition
The perfect Luffy, oda choosing him because he made him laugh is on brand for a show like one piece.
  • @mcurran6505
I'll admit, Inaki definitely has that Luffy energy.
  • @AG-jx7ly
This guys is the real deal. His respect for the origins of the anime and his dedication to Luffy’s character and development is what makes this interview so mesmerizing. And it absolutely shows in the series.
  • @jorgeclow
He shows so much respect for the character, the fans and the Mangá by studying Luffy so deeply. He certainly deserves all the recognition and compliments he is getting.
